Hidden beneath the shimmering waters of the Krishna Raja Sagara (KRS) Dam for many years, the Venugopala Swamy Temple is a symbol of resilience, faith, and architectural brilliance. Originally built in the 12th century by the Hoysala dynasty, this ancient temple was dedicated to Lord Krishna in his enchanting form as Venugopala, the divine flute player. The temple’s intricate Hoysala architecture, with its detailed sculptures and stunning carvings, made it a masterpiece of its time.
In 1924, as the construction of the KRS Dam began, the temple was submerged under water. For decades, the site remained inaccessible, only coming into view when the water levels dropped. But in a stunning act of preservation, the temple was meticulously relocated and rebuilt stone by stone to a higher ground in the village of Kannambadi. This restoration was done with the utmost care to maintain the sanctity and craftsmanship of the original structure, making it a true marvel of historical preservation.
Today, Venugopala Swamy Temple stands as a testament to the unwavering faith of the people and the resilience of its structure. It has become a spiritual haven for devotees and travelers alike, offering a unique blend of history, religion, and natural beauty. The serene setting, surrounded by the peaceful backwaters of the dam, provides a tranquil atmosphere that allows visitors to reflect, meditate, and connect with the divine. 🙏🏽✨
