Most people are waiting for the perfect system before they start. I just started. 48k+ followers later, the only tool that actually mattered was consistency. Being mission-driven (coupled with a single-minded focus, little brute force and dash of willpower) count for more than any scheduler ever will. We hear this every single day — and it doesn’t matter how “elite” your school is. We see the same gaps in college counseling support across every private school. They simply don’t have the resources to give each student the personalized attention that selective admissions demands. So when should you start college coaching? Not junior year. There’s only so much any admissions professional can do with the time that’s left. #collegeadmissions #darienct #katestone #collegeprep

Why we don’t take last-minute juniors 👇 After years of working with students who start the process late, I’ve seen how stressful and limiting it becomes for everyone. At that point, you’re not thoughtfully planning. You’re rushing to figure out applications, majors, and direction all at once. And you can’t do any of that well under pressure. This is what I spent a good majority of my career doing and I made a very deliberate decision to never subject my team of coaches to what I went through year after year. I would like to retain my A-players for many years to come :). What often happens is that families start guessing. We jump around to 3-4 different majors. Majors get chosen based on what sounds easier, not what actually fits the course selection or extracurricular (and that’s a problem). There’s no time to build meaningful extracurriculars, explore interests, or create a strong, aligned story. But the biggest mistake isn’t just waiting with the junior, it’s unintentionally putting the younger sibling on the same path. We hear this all the time: “I’ll focus on my junior now and help my younger child later.”But later comes fast. And suddenly, that younger student is in the same stressful position. That’s why we encourage families to start early. When students begin as freshmen, everything feels so different. It’s slower, steady, intentional, even peaceful comparatively. More time to explore interests and build out some depth. Less pressure on the student. Stronger, more authentic applications A process that’s actually enjoyable and inspiring (for everyone). Starting early is about doing things right, with time and intention. If you have younger kids, don’t wait. The experience is completely different when you give them the space to grow into their path and direction. Because this process should feel thoughtful, not frantic. I got the sweetest DM from a mom who attended our Family College Night and she said her daughter commented on how much Zac and I admire each other. It was the best DM I’ve ever received. Love conquers all. Never stop adoring each other. Going into business with my spouse was the best decision I’ve ever made because we get to work together towards a mutually shared vision for not just our lives but for our families and students too. #collegeadmissions #darienct #katestone #collegeprep

BC Calculus is a super challenging class for any student. How you weigh this decision should depend on your previous math grades and what is typical for the strongest students at your high school. At highly selective colleges, most of the successful applicants I work with have reached AP Calculus BC by senior year, even many who ultimately pursue humanities majors. #collegeadmissions #darienct #katestone

UVA’s expectations for rigor are VERY high. For instance, if a student doesn’t progress to at least Honors in a language, even in the 4.3–4.4 GPA range and applying ED, they may still be vulnerable. Even one area of weakness in the academic profile can make admission unlikely, including for in-state students. #collegeadmissions #darienct #katestone #uva

It’s not always the easiest approach to college admissions because it takes real self-examination and long term commitment. But, it is simple. You have to do the hard work of digging deep into yourself, your values, your interests and the world around you. When you commit to making on impact on the world around you, the people in your communities, being a competitive applicant follows. Then you can get to work on the competitions, accomplishments, awards and recognitions — those should follow your narrative. #collegeadmissions #darienct #katestone

What gets a straight A student rejected in college admissions? If there’s a lack of clarity in an application, that’s a red flag. If there’s a ton of activities but not one thing that really stands out, that’s a red flag. If everything “sounds” impressive but there aren’t any measurable, tangible targets or metrics you hit that did some good for someone, that’s a red flag. I hope this is a relief to hear bc it should be… It means you can calm down and focus yourself. It means you don’t have to be as busy as you think. It means that where your energy is going is paying dividends in college admissions (and in the hard and soft skills you need to be successful in life). You can actually choose one thing and focus on that and get more satisfaction and higher levels of learning bc you’ll have to make decisions about the vision, your goals, how to build something, how to go deep on something. You can always add more as it makes sense (especially if you start early). This is why things get so crazy junior year. It doesn’t have to be that way. Middle school is about building capacity. Capacity to think deeply. Capacity to focus. Capacity to improve. Capacity to take initiative. These are my favorite college prep tips for middle schoolers. But let’s call it what it is…personal development and proper training. 1. Read above grade level. Reading widely at 12 matters more now than at 16. 2. Start mastering foundational math: algebra fluency, fractions, mental math, and pattern recognition. 3. Write regularly, but not essays for teachers. Write opinion pieces, stories, and reflections. 4. Instead of five different activities, pick one or two things and take them seriously. How can you take ownership, set goals, and follow through? 5. Exposure: talk to professionals, visit workplaces, shadow people, notice problems in your community, and ideate possible solutions. 6. Build attention span — fewer screens, fewer distractions, more boredom, longer projects. 7. Learn to organize your time — use a calendar, break down projects, follow through. 8. Public speaking — practice articulating your thoughts out loud, debating ideas at the dinner table. If you want something, pitch it and present your case. 9. Embrace frustration tolerance and delayed gratification. Nothing on this list is résumé engineering. It’s developmental. They are life skills. #collegeadmissions #darienct #katestone

Entry to highly selective colleges rests on the most basic foundation: academic rigor and mastery. Look at any Common Data Set from an elite college, rigor and GPA are ranked as the top two most important factors. If you don’t meet the academic threshold, nothing else matters. That said, grades and test scores open doors, but they don’t get you selected. Before our students can really dive into our program (the 3 pillars: community impact, stacks of evidence, and branding and mentoring), we focus primarily on making sure they’re pursuing rigorous coursework and have the tools to handle it and excel. We had a student who was struggling academically, and we spent three months focused on helping them perform in an elite private school environment. That student is now excelling and is in the top 10% of their class. Then we can pursue independent intellectual pursuits and community impact projects: the differentiators.
