ONThe hike: Kinder Scout ⛰️
This hike starts in the village of Hayfield and heads up a small lane until you reach the start of the climb. The path first takes you through some woodland before coming out at Kinder Reservoir where the views of the day’s walk suddenly open up ahead. Walking along the shore you soon start to climb again, this time up a colourful valley full of heather and small waterfalls before making a steep pull up onto the ridge.
Once on the ridge the walking gets a little easier and the views are excellent as you follow along the cliffs. The rock formations up here are unusual and great to explore, especially when you reach Kinder Downfall. This jumble of rock and overhanging edges makes for dramatic views straight down into the valley below, with a waterfall cutting through it all. It’s an exciting spot but one that needs a bit of care and concentration, especially in bad weather. 🏞️
From here the ridge carries on until you reach Kinder Low where the trig point is located on some interesting rocks. Kinder Scouts true summit is set back from the ridge in the middle of a wide boggy plateau about a 5 minute hike north east from the trig point, although if you are more interested in the views on offer then Kinder Low is the perfect spot to sit and admire the picturesque scenery of the Peak District. The route from here then drops back down into the valley and circles back round to Hayfield.
It’s a hike full of interest, colour and views, and one that shows off everything the Peak District has to offer.
