Meniscus tears are one of the most common causes of knee pain. The meniscus is a piece of cartilage inside the knee that helps absorb shock and stabilise the joint. It can become irritated or torn through twisting movements, sport, deep squatting, or sometimes just from degeneration over time. In this video I show three simple movements that often reproduce symptoms when the meniscus is involved. These tests are not a diagnosis, but if they recreate sharp pain, catching, or discomfort along the joint line of the knee, it may be worth getting your knee assessed by a professional. Common symptoms of a meniscus injury include - pain along the inside or outside of the knee - pain with twisting or squatting - clicking, catching or locking instability - swelling after activity If these tests reproduce your symptoms, it’s a good indicator the meniscus could be involved. Save this video so you can refer back to the tests. #kneepain #hometests #meniscustear

Meniscus Tear Explained 🦵 The meniscus is a C-shaped cartilage in the knee that acts as a shock absorber between the femur and tibia. It helps distribute load, stabilize the joint, and protect the knee during movement. ⚠️ Meniscus tears can occur due to: • Traumatic injury during sports or twisting movements • Degenerative changes with aging 📌 During knee movement: • Flexion → Menisci glide posteriorly • Extension → Menisci glide anteriorly 🔎 Common types of meniscal tears: • Vertical • Longitudinal • Oblique • Radial • Degenerative 🧪 Clinical tests used for diagnosis: • McMurray Test • Thessaly Test 💡 Early diagnosis and proper physiotherapy rehabilitation can help restore knee stability, mobility, and function. Knee pain is often misunderstood, especially when different joint structures get lumped together as “the same thing.” But knowing what structure is involved can completely change how pain is evaluated and treated. When anatomy is clearly understood, decisions become more precise, expectations more realistic, and care more effective. That clarity is often the missing piece between temporary relief and long-term joint health. Save this tip for later. #KneePain #MeniscusHealth

Because that torn piece can move into the center of the joint, it often causes pain, swelling, and a feeling of catching or locking, especially when trying to fully straighten the knee. 🔎This injury commonly happens during twisting or pivoting movements, especially in sports, but it can also occur gradually over time. One of the biggest clues is a knee that suddenly feels stuck or cannot fully extend because the displaced tissue can mechanically block motion. 🧠Treatment depends on the size and location of the tear, symptoms, and activity demands. Some bucket handle tears require surgery when the fragment is displaced, while others can be managed conservatively. Rehab usually focuses on restoring motion, reducing swelling, rebuilding strength, and improving knee control before returning to higher-level activity this amazing video is from @rehabscience

PAIN EXPLAINED: KNEE MENISCUS IRRITATION & TEARS | SYMPTOMS, CAUSES & RECOVERY Sharp pain in the knee, especially when twisting or squatting, may indicate meniscus irritation or a tear. The meniscus is a cartilage structure within the knee that helps absorb shock and provide stability during movement. COMMON SYMPTOMS Meniscus issues can present as: * Pain within the knee * Swelling or stiffness * Catching or locking sensations * Discomfort with bending or rotation These symptoms are often more noticeable during activity or when changing direction. CAN IT IMPROVE? The encouraging aspect is that many meniscus irritations, and even some small tears, can improve with the right approach. Recovery timelines vary depending on the severity and how early the issue is addressed. In many cases, improvement is seen over weeks to a few months. WHY IT HAPPENS The knee sits between the hip and the foot, meaning it absorbs both load and rotational forces. When movement is limited elsewhere, particularly in the hips or ankles, the knee often compensates. Alignment also plays a role. For example, wider hips can increase the angle through the knee, placing more strain on the meniscus. THE BIGGER PICTURE Effective rehab looks beyond the knee itself. It involves: * Reducing excess muscle tension around the joint * Restoring mobility through the hips, ankles, and spine * Improving strength and control to support better movement Without this, altered walking patterns can develop, often leading to secondary issues elsewhere in the body. KEY TAKEAWAY The knee rarely acts alone.Smart movement supports healing. #KneePainRelief #MeniscusInjury #InjuryRecovery #MoveBetterFeelBetter #manchester

Let’s talk about meniscus tears… . . Lots of people have them, but they don’t all cause pain. . . If you’re currently having knee pain and have been diagnosed with a meniscus tear in the past it’s worth getting thoroughly evaluated to see if that is truly the source of your pain. . . We see a lot of active people with knee pain that have been diagnosed with meniscus tears that have been able to get out of pain and back to the sports & activities they love! . . ⚠️: We are not saying that meniscus tears don’t cause pain. Some certainly can, but some also cannot cause pain. ⚠️ A detailed physical evaluation mixed with with radiographic evidence is the only way to truly tell if your knee pain is most likely coming from a meniscus tear. . . Moral of the story: you don’t have to live with knee pain forever because you’ve been told you have a meniscus tear… . . ————————————————————————————- ✨Our 3-step process to your recovery✨ 1. Relieve your pain 2. Identify and address the underlying root cause 3. Give you tools to stay pain free long term . . Questions?
