What’s the most important thing for technical skiing gear? That it’s light weight in your backpack. The escaper is one to add to your kit if you’re into technical ski mountaineering. Half the rope twice the skiing. I’m not a huge fan of it for long raps on a dynamic rope, but on a short static rope we’re in business. Found our way into some fun fresh turns on last weekends technical ski mountaineering seminar. Yesterday, one of our groups spent some time looking at how recent wind-affected cornice features were behaving and practicing testing techniques on a small, low-consequence slope with no avalanche hazard. These kinds of days are invaluable — building familiarity with the snowpack, refining movement and communication, and learning techniques without committing to bigger terrain.
