INAlong India’s western coast, a single language learned to write itself five ways. Konkani, spoken from Goa to Kerala, flows across alphabets — Devanagari, Roman, Kannada, Malayalam, and Perso-Arabic. Each script marks a journey. Hindu Saraswats kept it in Devanagari; Catholics under Portuguese rule shaped it into Roman; Karnataka Saraswats wrote it in Kannada; Kasaragod families wove it into Malayalam; and Konkani Muslims once penned it in Arabic Nastaliq. The language stayed one, even as its letters divided like rivers. Suppressed under Portuguese censorship yet sung in hymns and folk verse, Konkani endured every conquest and conversion. When Goa joined India in 1961, the question arose: whose script defines a people? In 1987, Devanagari became its official form, but every community still writes in its own hand.
