And somehow… that became the artwork. I love this idea because it completely changes how I think about creativity. We usually think creative work means adding: more ideas, more features, more explanation. But maybe some things become stronger when you remove what isn’t essential. Not improve it. On Willem de Kooning’s birthday, we’re taking a closer look at the monumental ‘Untitled III.’ It’s a gem from the artist’s most coveted periods of production, the mid 1970s, and is a highlight of The Now and Contemporary Evening Auction at #SothebysNewYork. By the time de Kooning painted ‘Untitled III’ in 1975, he had permanently moved from the city to his beloved country home in Springs, East Hampton. Now fully immersed in nature, he developed a new routine of biking, fishing, and swimming, and it’s in this environment that he produced some of his greatest paintings to date. With its gestural strokes of rich vermilions, steel blues, and saffron yellows, ‘Untitled III’ captures the spirit of renewal and unbridled vitality of this seminal period in de Kooning’s career. ‘Untitled III,’ which will be featured in The Now & Contemporary Evening Sale on 14 May, presented in partnership with @celine. Edward Kienholz’s “Hopps Hopps Hopps,” 1959, depicts Walter Hopps as a petty criminal—proffering works by Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, and Jackson Pollock as though they were illicit goods– poking fun at Hopps’s role as a “dealer” of art and at the city’s artistic conservatism. The back of the work reveals even more about Hopps as it’s filled with secret compartments containing various letters, candy, and items Kienholz fished out of the wastebaskets from Hopps’s office. Introducing ‘DE KOONING | DECADES,’ three superlative masterworks from the de Kooning Family Collection, set to make their auction debut at #SothebysNewYork this November. Step inside the painter’s home and studio in East Hampton. Each of these works, ‘Montauk II’ from 1969, ‘Untitled’, c. 1979, and ‘The Hat Upstairs’ from 1987, marks the culmination of a pivotal decade in de Kooning’s life and work. Ultimately, ‘DE KOONING | DECADES’ traces the evolution of the artist’s practice from the late 1960s to the late 1980s. Consigned directly from the de Kooning Family Collection, these paintings were personally selected by the artist’s daughter, Lisa de Kooning, for her collection, recognizing each as the among the best of her father’s work. All three works were painted in de Kooning’s self-designed home and studio in East Hampton – a deeply influential and private, rarely-seen oasis where the artist lived and worked starting in the 1960s until his death in 1997. These paintings will star in our Contemporary Evening Auction at Sotheby’s New York. Nascida em Chicago, em 1925, foi uma das grandes protagonistas do expressionismo abstrato, em diálogo direto com nomes como Jackson Pollock e Willem de Kooning — mas sem jamais ocupar um lugar secundário. Sua pintura é gesto, densidade e ritmo, atravessados por memória e sensação. Vivendo na França a partir do fim dos anos 1950, especialmente em Vétheuil, Mitchell construiu telas monumentais que recusam delicadeza decorativa. Cor em estado de tensão. Pinceladas largas, camadas sobrepostas, luz que vibra. Obras como La Grande Vallée ou seus grandes dípticos e trípticos não representam o mundo natural — condensam sua intensidade. Curiosidade: antes de se dedicar integralmente à pintura, Mitchell foi campeã de patinação artística na juventude.
