KEDi balik bulunya yang lucu ada ekosistem parasit seperti kutu (Ctenocephalides felis) yang bawa larva cacing pita (Dipylidium caninum). Kalau tanpa sengaja ketelan itu kutu pas lagi dicium-cium atau telurnya nempel di bibir, bisa kena infeksi cacingan. Belum lagi jamur Ringworm atau kadas yang spora-sporanya suka banget nangkring di batang bulu; sekali nempel di muka, nanti muncul bercak merah melingkar yang gatalnya minta ampun dan menular dengan cepat.
Lagi, ada ancaman tersembunyi disebutnya bakteri Bartonella henselae penyebab Cat Scratch Disease. Bakteri ini biasanya ada di feses kutu yang nempel di bulu atau kuku kucing, bakteri ini bisa masuk dan bikin kelenjar getah bening bengkak sampai demam tinggi. Ada juga Toxoplasma gondii, parasit protozoa yang sering ada di bulu kalau si kucing selesai jilat-jilat area bokongnya yang kena kotoran. Kalau masuk ke sistem imun, efeknya bisa jangka panjang ke saraf atau kehamilan.
Bulu kucing ibaratnya "filter udara" yang nangkap segala macam, mulai dari debu, air liur yang udah kering, sampai sisa-sisa feses mikron. Air liur kucing penuh bakteri Pasteurella yang kalau masuk ke selaput lendir mulut atau hidung manusia bisa bikin infeksi pernapasan atau iritasi parah. Harus paham kalau kucing itu self grooming pakai lidah yang artinya dia habisin semua kuman ke seluruh badannya.
