We can see this by introducing the concept of generalized force and generalized momentum here in the video. Naturally after that we arrive to familiar from middle school Newtonian second law. Sir Isaac Newton formulated his second law of motion in his seminal work “Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica” (Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy), which was first published in 1687. In physics, Lagrangian mechanics is a formulation of classical mechanics founded on the principle of least action. It was introduced by the Italian-French mathematician and astronomer (scientists were so universal back then!) Joseph-Louis Lagrange in his presentation to the Turin Academy of Science in 1760 culminating in his 1788 grand opus, Mécanique analytique. Lagrangian mechanics describes a mechanical system as a pair (M, L) consisting of a configuration space M and a smooth function L within that space called a Lagrangian (in Russian we call it Lagrange function and the density of it we call “Lagrangian”, used in elementary particles physics). For many systems, L = T − V, where T and V are the kinetic and potential energy of the system, respectively. The principle of least action requires that the action functional S of the system derived from L must remain at a stationary point - in our case a minimum - throughout the time evolution of the system. This constraint allows the calculation of the equations of motion of the system (any system: qed, quantum gravity) using Lagrange’s equations. A good book to start studying theoretical physics is Landau, Lifshitz “Theoretical physics course. Classical mechanics.”, Vol. I.
