Functional play builds the foundation for communication. 🥄 During play, we model simple words, expand vocabulary, and encourage turn-taking and imitation. Little moments like these are where early language begins. 🤍🗣️ #EarlyIntervention #SpeechTherapy #PlayBasedLearning #SLP #languagedevelopment

Long before a child says their first word, their brain is wiring for sound, understanding, and social connection. 🧠👶 Communication isn’t just speaking — it’s listening, responding, gesturing, and connecting with the world around them. Understanding receptive and expressive language helps parents and caregivers support children in ways that really matter. 📖 Read the full article on our website to explore how language develops from infancy to the early school years. 🔗 Link in bio. #earlylanguagedevelopment #languagedevelopment #earlylearning #childdevelopment #parentingtips

🤔 MYTH OR FACT: EVERY BABY SHOULD LEARN SIGN LANGUAGE 💥 It’s a MYTH! While teaching signs is not harmful, it’s not necessary for every child! 🤟🏼 Most kids will use gestures and vocalizations to support their expressive language while learning new words. Some kids benefit from additional support in the form of “baby signs” (which is not the same as sign language!) ➡️ If you do choose to teach your baby signs, swipe to read about our tips! #slpofinstagram #speechtherapy #childdevelopment #babysign #earlyintervention

Predictable language builds strong communication. Using the same words in the same order during daily routines helps your child understand and learn language faster. Think: “Time to wash hands.” “Turn on water.” “Soap on.” “Rinse. Dry.” When routines sound the same each time, your child’s brain learns to recognize patterns, understand meaning, anticipate what comes next and feel confident trying the words on their own. You don’t need new scripts every day. Same routine. Same order. Same words. This predictability is what helps language stick! #parenttip #communication #earlyliteracy #speechtips #thesoundsplayground

If your child says part of a word, this is how to respond 👇 Just model the full word naturally during play 🧸🗣 This approach supports children who are building language one word at a time (often called analytic language processors). We model rather than correct because: ✨ it keeps communication positive ✨ it reduces pressure to “get it right” ✨ it encourages more attempts over time Speech sounds are often unclear when children are first learning language and that’s completely normal 🤍 Quick note: children who are gestalt language processors (GLPs) often need a different approach, so this strategy isn’t for everyone. Language grows best when it feels safe, playful and pressure-free. Save this to try during play 💜 #SpeechTherapyTips #ToddlerSpeech #EarlyYearsSupport #ParentSupportUK #SpeechDevelopment

It’s FRIDAY 🥳 which means it’s time for another FEATURE FRIDAY where I share another voice in the maternal and child health/development space. I’m so excited about today’s feature as this topic is on my mind a lot right now since Selah has just started talking 🥰 Today I want to introduce you to @eryn.russell_slp. Eryn is a pediatric speech-language pathologist with 8 years of experience coaching parents and helping toddlers say their first words 🗣️ If your toddler isn’t using words yet, gestures and signs are powerful tools — they actually help build the foundation for spoken language! In this video, Eryn walks through 3 simple strategies to encourage gestures and signs so toddlers can communicate before words are ready — reducing frustration and building connection along the way. Save this for later and go follow @eryn.russell_slp for more toddler communication support ✨

It's never too early to work on language skills! Babies are listeners and the way they develop their language is through interaction and exposure to vocabulary! Wake windows offer great opportunities to work on language skills with your infant. ✨️Tummy Time is a great time to narrate what your child is looking at and tracking. The repetition of the vocabulary is great exposure to that word! ✨️Carry on a conversation with your little one. Take turns like you would with an older child or adult. ✨️ Sing a song to them and make it fun and engaging! ✨️ Self-talk and Parallel talk are great for daily routines! Bath time, playtime, meal time, etc. Self-talk you are narrating your own actions while parallel talk you are narrating your child's actions. ✨️READING! It's never too early to crack open a book with your little one! #speechtherapy #slp #slpa #languagedevelopment #infants
