36Today we’re checking out the smaller side of Large Format, the Auto Graflex JR. This camera is a 2 1/4 X 3 1/4, which makes it smaller and lighter than most large format cameras, and it is a SLR with a pop up chimney for the waist level viewfinder, helping it to be very compact when closed. The large focal plane shutter allowing for 1/1000 of a second top shutter speed made these cameras very capable for their time.

MAOne part of the process I’m using for this new handmade photography series is Urauchi, a traditional wet mounting technique using wheat starch paste as a binder.
Each photograph is handprinted using silver and salt (salt print technique) on a very thin, translucent washi kozo paper 16gsm
Because the paper is so delicate, it needs a stronger support to be handled safely. So it is mounted onto a thicker washi sheet giving it stability and an occasion to play with textures and tones .
This print is one of several tests, exploring different degrees of gold toning, along with variations in washi texture and paper tone to find the balance that best elevates the final work.
Silver gilding will be incorporated as well.
So many small steps, from pressing the shutter, developing the film, and finally bringing the story onto paper.
