Been working with @marianufootball DB @dhunt_21 ⚡️ Almost approaching spring ball time, I got with Daryl to sharpen up his transitions and breaks. Daryl has a naturally narrow base, and we worked a lot on keeping his feet inside of his frame when moving laterally while still being explosive 💪🏽 #training #defense #db #football #drills

A tour of shots from @chloe_meester_ Swing #1- Seam/Daylight A nice dig a middle back on a ball that needs to either be hit more into the court (get on top of) or move a defender laterally! Swing #2- Swipe Good job by the blocker to identify this and angle her arms/hands back into the court! Swing #3- High Hands Kill Nice flat shot off the finger tips to end the rally 👏 Team: @louisvillevb

Contralateral pelvic drop during running is called Trendelenburg Gait and is most commonly fixed by performing glute medius/minimus drills for the stance limb. This pelvic drop is different during lunges, because it occurs when you descend into hip flexion. The muscles responsible for laterally stabilizing the pelvis can change as you move from neutral to deep hip flexion. For example, the glute max becomes more of a hip abductor and the glute medius/minimus become more of a hip internal rotator. What makes this more difficult to fix as a coach, trainer, or physio is that it’s not always a strength issue. Many times you’ll see your stronger clients do this, as they have very strong glutes in isolation (frontal and transverse plane hip abduction). Often times, it’s a motor control issue. The client has the strength but isn’t aware that they’re doing this and doesn’t realize it’s “suboptimal” mechanics. I say suboptimal because whenever you shift and contort your body, you rely more on passive elastic tissues for stability instead of active muscle contraction, which can cause more wear and tear over time. Not trying to fear-monger, as your body can build up resilience over time, but at the very least it doesn’t look pretty and might not build the glutes maximally. So how do you fix it? The first step is identifying whether or not you do it. Simply film yourself from behind during lunges, split squats, or step ups. The next step involves consciously attempting to keep the pelvic neutral as you descend. This can also be paired with lateral hip strengthening movements, but as I said earlier, strength isn’t always the problem. I’m hoping to hear some useful tips, cues, and drills from other trainers and physios.

When Ben Wallace guarded Tim Duncan, it was one of the purest clashes of defensive pride versus offensive fundamentals the NBA ever saw. Wallace wasn’t tall for a center, but he was unbelievably strong, quick laterally, and disciplined. He fought for position before Duncan even caught the ball, bumping him off preferred spots and making every post entry pass feel like a battle. Duncan thrived on comfort and rhythm. Wallace’s whole mission was to take that away. Instead of trying to block every shot, Wallace focused on body leverage and timing. He stayed low, used his core strength to absorb Duncan’s shoulder bumps, and forced him into tougher fadeaways rather than clean bank shots. On rebounds, Wallace was relentless. He’d wedge inside, explode upward, and turn defense into extra possessions. It wasn’t flashy defense. It was suffocating, physical, and mentally exhausting for a scorer who relied on precision. Even then, Duncan still produced because great players adapt. But Wallace made him work for every bucket. Those matchups showed how elite defense isn’t just about height or wingspan. It’s about positioning, anticipation, and refusing to give ground. When Wallace locked in, he could turn one of the most fundamentally sound scorers ever into someone who had to grind for everything. That’s defensive respect at the highest level.

Running backs live in lateral movement. Very rarely do they just run straight ahead. They shuffle. They press the hole. They bounce outside. They cut and accelerate. That’s why we train shuffling and pushing off the inside foot. This drill forces athletes to: • stay balanced while moving laterally • generate power from the inside leg • transition from shuffle to sprint • maintain body control under fatigue Going 5, 10, back to the start, 10 again, shuffle, shuffle, then finishing with a sprint and wrap around the cones builds something huge for athletes: endurance while maintaining mechanics. Late in games when legs are tired, great running backs can still move laterally, explode through gaps, and finish runs. That’s what we’re training. This car isn’t driving onto solid ground. It’s timing its exit on a moving system. As waves lift and drop the ferry, the ramp shifts vertically and laterally, breaking the assumption of a stable surface. Every second, the driver adjusts throttle, steering, and timing to stay aligned while the platform moves beneath the tires. What looks simple is actually a dynamic coordination problem between vehicle. Success often depends on adapting to instability rather than waiting for perfect conditions. Follow @aicontroled for real-world mechanics explained clearly.
