MYI’ve been making homemade laundry detergent for many years, and this is my favorite recipe because it’s SO simple and washes our clothes so well.
No shredding soap bars.
No melting anything.
No giant 5-gallon buckets.
It’s just a dry powder you mix together in a bowl and store in a container.
Homemade Laundry Detergent
6 cups washing soda (55 oz box)
6 cups baking soda
2 cups Epsom salt
1 cup sea salt
20–25 drops essential oils (I like citrus or orange for a fresh scent and extra cleaning boost)
Mix everything well and store in a container. I found this plastic container at Walmart for cheap—it fits the batch perfectly. Glass would be a better option if you have a big glass container to store it in.
Use 1–2 tablespoons per load. This batch lasts our family around 4 months.
The batch costs about $20 total, making roughly 150–200 loads (about 10–15¢ per load).
Why these ingredients?
• Washing soda – boosts cleaning power and lifts dirt
• Baking soda – deodorizes and softens water
• Epsom salt + sea salt – soften water and improve rinsing
• Essential oils – optional, add a fresh scent (citrus helps cut grease)
This recipe is safe for all washers, including HE, dissolves easily in cold water, and the essential oils are optional for sensitive skin. If you have hard water, just add a little extra washing soda.
