SUIf you ask me, the most common problem with laybacks is surfers pushing the board away from themselves — straightening both legs and ending up with the board way too far out.
If you’re John John, you can get away with it because pros know the exact limits of what’s possible and have the timing to pull the board back under them. But for the rest of us mortals, that’s almost impossible.
So if you’re just starting to work on laybacks, here’s my advice: treat it like a carve first. Forget the tail release for now. Think of it as a carve with a bit of counter-rotation in the upper body — leaning back and touching the water behind you with your trailing hand as you start to carve. This teaches the movement without blowing the tail.
Once you’ve got that down and want to push the limits, then it’s time to kick harder with the back foot. Just remember to bend the front knee and keep it under you so the board stays connected and doesn’t run away.

VIToledo challenging the physics ⚡️with this sort of layback roundhouse cutback, beautifully executed!
He smoothly play with his upper body rotation by leaving his back hand/arm behind, getting into a very compromised position and then recover using the front arm as a pivot to launch his weight back to the front.
Basically played with the balance, leaving his weight back and trusting his momentum would be enough to recover the position.
It’s great how he connects each step so smoothly and aggressively at the same time.
