CRDo you call it a Square in a Square or an Economy Block? Or have you heard another name for it?
Whatever you call it, I call it the easiest quilt block!! I love a good lazy project, don’t you??
Here’s how to make the quilt blocks:
1. Cut two squares the same size. I used a layer cake, and I cut the ten inch pieces in half twice, so I ended up with five inch squares.
2. Sew two squares, right sides together, on all four sides. Sew edge to edge.
3. Mark two diagonal center lines.
4. Snip in the center and cut through ONE LAYER ONLY on the marked lines. Cut all the way to the corner.
5. Iron the flaps open.
6. Measure your block (mine was 6 1/2 inches), and cut another square the same size. Place right sides together and sew all four sides just as before.
7. Mark and cut just as before.
8. Iron open the flaps.
You can keep going with more squares, just measure and cut! Or you can stop here and make a bunch of them for a quilt!

STQuick layer cake block how to.
Take three 10”X10” square. Cut two 1.5” strips from one end. Turn. Cut two 1.5” strips. Turn and cut two more 1.5” strips. Turn a fourth time and cut two final 1.5” strips. You should be left with three 4” squares (trim up if needed).
We will be sewing the strips on now in reverse order. So use your shorted 1.5” strips first and leave your longest (the 1.5”X10” until last).
Set one 4” square in the middle. Take two 1.5” strips (the last set you cut which measure 1.5”X4”) in a different color and sew them to the left and right or your square using a scant 1/4” seam allowance. Press open. Take your next set of strips that match the set you just sewed on (mine are blue) and trim them to 6” in length. Sew one to the top and one to the bottom. Repeat with your third color trimming the side pieces to 6” and your top and bottom to 8”.
When complete you have a 8” block. Repeat with the rest of your blocks/layer cake.
✂️ 4” square block, (inner block) 1.5X4” on sides of block, 1.5”X6” on top and bottom, (outer block) 1.5”X6” on sides, 1.5”X8” on top and bottom.

ABAll the blocks for my Maple Valley quilt are done ✔️ and next up is arranging them into rows
I’m using a Layer Cake (10” squares) to make a lap sized Maple Valley (50x62). That one Layer Cake pack makes all of the leaf blocks plus a fun pieced border.

JEYesterday began the 5th and final week of the Honey quilt along!! We are finishing up our tops. Here is mine❤️💚

The Honey quilt uses a layer cake. It’s a really quick one to put together. As soon as you cut it, you start assembling! There are no blocks to make. The cross stitch-like design shows due to the arrangement of the squares.
