Today I had the pleasure of serving as a judge at the LCPS Regional Science Fair here in Virginia. I truly enjoyed speaking with the students and hearing them explain their research projects across disciplines like Mathematics, Physics, and Astronomy. Their confidence, curiosity, and ability to think critically was incredibly impressive. Moments like these remind me why I am so passionate about STEM education and about helping students develop the skills to think, question, research, and innovate. Experiences like this are exactly the kind of curiosity and scientific thinking we aim to cultivate at Western STEM Academy. lCPS visited the home weeks prior to Miana being found unresponsive, severely malnourished, & wearing a pull up diaper. Miana weighed only 43 pounds. A medical examiner said the girl had head lice, there was a yellowish tint to her skin, and her bones were “visibly protruding” because of her extreme thinness. She had multiple bruises & lacerations on her body. In 2021, Miana was enrolled in the Upshur County Schools virtual program. CPS made MULTIPLE VISITS prior to her death, but did NOTHING to protect Miana! Governor Patrick Morrisey said, “an internal investigation is underway into Miana Moran’s death.” Senator Jay Taylor said, “We cannot accept the system where the agency investigates itself behind closed doors & elect lawmakers who are unable to confirm that children are truly protected.” Tyler Levi Carter, brother was arrested last week and charged with one count of murder. Aaron Moran, the father & Shannon Robinson, the stepmother was arrested & charged in the death of Miana. #listen_to_our_kids #systemfailure #cps #westvirginia #death

The mother of a 5-year-old boy subjected to racial slurs in a now-viral video is asking the Loudoun County school board to take stronger action.⁠ ⁠ She says the video was made by a Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) sixth grade boy off school grounds and shared with others.⁠ ⁠ The 5-year-old's mother was joined by others from the Asian-American community who are also calling for a more direct response.⁠ ⁠ Even though she stepped forward at a public meeting, the little boy’s mom has asked News4 not to show her face to protect her child.⁠ ⁠ Her message to the school board: Do more to address racial harassment.⁠ ⁠ Others carried signs delivering a similar message. Some of the signs had the words “don’t hurt me” — that’s what the 5-year-old was heard saying in the video that set off a firestorm.⁠ ⁠ The 5-year-old's parents say their preschooler was recorded on video by a sixth grader. The older boy used racially derogatory slurs while the younger boy called out for help.⁠ ⁠ The principal of the middle school attended by the older boy sent out a statement promising the community that even though the video was made off school grounds, the incident is being handled with the “seriousness it deserves.”⁠ ⁠ Superintendent Aaron Spence sent a strongly worded statement to the entire LCPS community which read, in part, “Let me be clear: hate speech and racial slurs have no place in our schools or in our community. The Loudoun County Administrator included funding for school resource officers at all elementary schools in Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS). This is a major step in making it a reality. The next step is for the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors to vote on approving the budget. After that, the school board would have to approve the SRO program before it could be implemented on school property. Currently, school resource officers are assigned to all LCPS middle and high schools. The county’s sheriff has been pushing for SROs in elementary schools since 2019. But the Loudoun County School Board is not yet on board.
