Meet the leaf sheep (Costasiella kuroshimae), a fascinating sea slug found in shallow waters. This tiny mollusk feeds on algae and can ‘steal’ chloroplasts from its food, using them to perform photosynthesis—a process called kleptoplasty. The leaf-like structures on its back, called cerata, help with breathing, store chloroplasts, and provide camouflage. 🐑🌿 While it’s harmless to humans, it’s best to admire these delicate creatures without touching them. 🐌✨

REFriday’s online nature hit is brought to you by the Leaf Sheep.
These little creatures are sea slugs that can be found in coral reefs and seagrass beds in the warm waters of the Indo-Pacific region.
Not only are they cute as a button, they’re one of the only animals that we know of that can photosynthesize! They do this by eating algae - digesting some of it and keeping some (the chloroplasts) which it stores in those green leaf-like appendages.
🌞The process is called kleptoplasty, a term derived from the Greek word ‘Kleptes’, which means “thief”.
Life sure knows how to surprise and delight us with its beauty and complexity.
