RERussian learning progress - 3 months. 🇷🇺 🗣️
As I mention in the video, I have been learning Russian for three months and I wanted to show you my realistic progress. Some people will learn more quickly than me and other people will learn more slowly, it all depends on the amount of free time that we have available but I’d estimate my level to be somewhere around B1.
I know some of you will be wondering why Russian and not Ukrainian so I just want to address this question. I learnt Russian with a view to learning other Slavic languages in the future, but I chose to begin with Russian because it is by far the most widely spoken Slavic language. In the future, I would love to learn Ukrainian Serbian Polish and many other Slavic languages, but I chose Russian because there are many many free resources available online, such as videos and podcasts which are not necessarily available in these other languages, at least at the moment.
I’d like to elaborate on some of the grammatical particularities, which I mentioned in the video. Firstly, Russian has a complex system of cases and different endings that need to be added to a word depending on its function. In the sentence. next, there are many different verbs of motion which depends on the specifics of the action and can often be translated in English simply using the verb to go and there is also a distinction between imperfective and imperfective verbs. That is every time you use a verb you have to state whether it is an ongoing act in time, or whether it is a completed act in time I had already encountered this when learning Greek, so it was somewhat familiar, but still causes me many difficult difficulties.
Clearly I had somewhat rehearsed a script for this video, so the speech is not entirely representative of my fluency in a natural conversation. I would nonetheless say that I can have a relatively fluent conversation about simple topics provided that my interlocutor the patient with my errors in pronunciation and grammar.
