Have you ever seen a leatherback turtle before? The Leatherback Sea Turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) is the largest of all sea turtles and one of the most unique! And @ausmashmash had this unique encounter! Unlike other sea turtles, leatherbacks don’t have a hard shell. Instead, they have a tough, leathery skin with ridges that help them glide effortlessly through the ocean. They can grow over 2 meters (7 feet) long and weigh up to 900 kg (2,000 lbs) and they can dive over 1,200 meters (4,000 feet) deep—deeper than any other sea turtle species! As you can see they’re Jellyfish Lovers: Their diet consists mainly of jellyfish, helping to control jellyfish populations in the ocean. Leatherbacks have been around since the time of the dinosaurs—let’s help protect them for future generations! . . . . . . . . Video used with permission. The leatherback sea turtle is the largest turtle in the world, growing to more than 6.5 feet (two meters) in length and weighing up to 2,000 pounds (900 kilograms). They are the only species of sea turtle that lack scales and a hard shell. They are named for their tough rubbery skin and have existed in their current form since the age of the dinosaurs. Where do They Live? Leatherbacks occur in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. Nesting beaches are primarily located in tropical latitudes around the world. Globally, the largest remaining nesting aggregations are found in Trinidad and Tobago, West-Indies (Northwest Atlantic) and Gabon, Africa (Southeast Atlantic). Nesting in the United States usually occurs in Florida, Puerto Rico and St. Croix (U.S. Virgin Islands). They lay typically less than 100 eggs each time. Leatherbacks are also the Deepest-Diving Turtle, Capable of reaching depths of close to 4,000 feet (1.200m). 🎥 by @mikesudi16 @karibinyaralas

😱 UNBELIEVABLE! HOW IS THIS EVEN REAL?! 😱 Wait... is this a portal to another dimension, or a living nightmare? 🛑 Take a good, hard look at this image. You might think you’re looking at a monster from a sci-fi horror movie, but this is 100% REAL. This is the inside of a Leatherback Sea Turtle’s mouth, and honestly, we’re still processing how nature even thought of this! 🐢💀 #LeatherbackTurtle #NatureIsMetal #SeaMonster #OceanMysteries #WildlifeShock

I still cannot believe this happened. Let alone seeing the rarest possible sea turtle. But I was not prepared for having a real dinosaur do a backflip in front of my eyes and then deciding to swim through me... The leatherback sea turtle has remained unchanged in Evolution over the last 100-110 million years. Which means they were already here when the T-Rex came and stayed long after they went extinct. They are very deep divers, on the hunt for jellyfish, taking only short surface breaks and stay down for a long time, which makes it so difficult to spot them. And now the sad part: The Eastern Pacific leatherback is among the most critically imperiled marine turtle populations worldwide, with estimates indicating fewer than about 1 000 adult females remain. Dedication, skill and a tiny bit of luck that we were able to catch this needle in a Pacific haystack with @apexoceandivers #leatherback #turtle #mexico #OceanGiants #underwater

The inside of a Leatherback sea turtle’s mouth looks almost alien, lined with hundreds of sharp, backward pointing spines called papillae that extend down its throat 🐢 These spines are not teeth but specialized structures that help grip slippery prey like jellyfish and prevent them from escaping once swallowed, allowing the leatherback to feed efficiently in the open ocean without chewing! 🐢 Do you know the leatherback sea turtle? The leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) surfaces to breathe. 🌊 Like all sea turtles, it is an air-breathing reptile and must regularly return to the surface to take in oxygen before continuing its journey through the ocean. What makes this species different from other sea turtles is that it does not have a hard shell. Instead, it has a flexible, leathery carapace, which allows it to dive deeper than any other sea turtle and travel vast distances across the open ocean. The leatherback is also the largest sea turtle in the world, a true ocean giant and an essential part of healthy marine ecosystems. 🎥 Video credit: David Currie @dcurrie_drones ✨ Take a moment to visit his page and enjoy more stunning ocean imagery. 🌐 www.theturtlemanfoundation.org Saving one turtle at a time. 🐢✨
