In the books written by Lee Child, Reacher is described as about 6'5" and around 250 poundsโhuge and intimidating.
That detail was a big reason the TV show was made after the earlier Jack Reacher movies starring Tom Cruise got criticism from some fans. Cruise is a great actor, but heโs much shorter than the book version of Reacher. The series leaned heavily into casting someone with the same towering build as the character, which fans of the books absolutely loved.

And yetโฆ here I am. Book 30. Why?
Itโs not the paint-by-numbers plots. Itโs the character. Itโs Jack Reacher.
Maybe the greatest modern crime-fiction hero-protagonist (is that a thing? It is now) in modern literature.
He treads very close to the line and is quick to violenceโฆ but he (nearly) always has the moral high ground.
Heโs funny. Heโs kind. He helps the little guy. Heโs weird. He lives an unconventional life of freedom, completely unburdened by societyโs expectations.
I think weโd all like to be a little bit more Reacher...maybe with slightly less violence and definitely less coffee.
If Iโm being totally honest, Iโm more excited by the TV adaptation these days. Reacher still feels fresh three seasons in, and Alan Ritchson is basically the Reacher I always imagined.
