Mangrove forests are some of the most important nurseries in the ocean. Their tangled roots create a protected world where young fish, rays, and sharks can grow safely before heading into the open sea. For species like the lemon shark (Negaprion brevirostris), these shallow estuaries provide shelter, food, and the conditions young sharks need during their most vulnerable stage of life Researchers in Panama have recently begun documenting juvenile lemon sharks in mangrove estuaries around Coiba, including genetically confirmed young-of-the-year individuals. The discovery suggests these mangrove systems may serve as previously unrecognized nursery habitat for the species in the eastern Pacific. As Project Lemon Aid, our research project in Turks and Caicos, expands, we’re building a clearer picture of the lemon shark’s life history. This year, we reached an exciting milestone: acoustic tagging. These tags let us track sharks’ movements, behavior, and habitat use over time. Each tag emits a unique ultrasonic signal, which is detected by underwater receivers. Surgically implanted in the sharks’ abdominal cavities, the tags don’t harm or bother them. We periodically retrieve the receivers to analyze the data and learn more about these amazing animals. Special thanks to Rock The Ocean for supporting this part of our research. sharks4kids.com/lemon-shark-research

On the move! This subadult lemon shark (Negaprion brevirostris) was spotted cruising along one of Bimini’s reefs! Although not typically thought of as reef sharks, lemon sharks have been observed swimming through shallow coral reefs, using them as underwater highways between mangroves and sand flats. _____________________________________ 📸: @wadewithwyatt ✍️: @tim.furst #research #education #conservation #bimini #biminisharklab

Conservation measures taken over the past 20 years have resulted in some of the healthiest shark populations we’ve seen in several decades for some species. A consequence of this recovery is that anglers are losing more fish to sharks, both during the fight and after the fish are released. This could impact the sustainability of flats fisheries. BTT is studying shark-and-angler interactions by location, season and fishing method in the Florida Keys. The results will help inform future management decisions, including ways to reduce interactions with sharks and limit impacts to our valuable flats fishery. Learn more at BTT.org/Sharks! Hammerhead sightings are becoming more rare in Hawaiʻi 🦈 These incredible sharks play a vital role in keeping ocean ecosystems balanced, yet their populations have declined drastically due to overfishing, shark finning, and bycatch. Seeing one while diving is a powerful reminder of what we still have left to protect. At One Ocean Diving, every encounter is an opportunity to educate, shift perspectives, and advocate for sharks instead of fearing them. How you can help: • Support sustainable seafood choices • Never support shark fin products • Share accurate information about sharks • Support organizations working to protect them • Respect wildlife when you’re in the ocean Sharks belong in the ocean — and the ocean needs them🌊 #OneOceanDiving #HammerheadShark #SaveSharks #OceanConservation #sharkid_faith

In mangroves, the shoreline isn’t just scenery—it’s a hard boundary that can decide a hunt. Striped mullet (Mugil cephalus) often try to escape predators in the shallows by bursting into fast turns or even jumping. But in tight root forests, that panic move can backfire. Here, the fish commits to a leap and collides with a mangrove prop root, a real-world “wall” at full speed. The impact stuns it just long enough to disrupt coordinated swimming, and in shallow water that loss of timing is everything. A blacktip reef shark (Carcharhinus melanopterus) is built for exactly this kind of interception: short-range acceleration, sharp directional control, and a clean grab once prey hesitates. Notice the physics cues—droplets above the surface, a silt puff below, and the fish dropping back into the water off-balance. The shark doesn’t need a long chase; it needs a fraction of a second where the prey can’t generate clean thrust. Mangroves protect juvenile fish by offering cover, but they also create edges, corners, and obstacles. When prey misjudge a turn, the habitat becomes part of the predator’s advantage.

Spotted at Sea 🦈 A shark gliding through the turquoise shallows today. Most sharks along South Florida’s coast are blacktips or spinners, and they spend their days cruising the shoreline looking for fish. They’re a sign of a healthy marine ecosystem — something Biscayne Bay and our coastal waters depend on. The ocean is always alive… you just have to look closely. 📹 Filmed by a friend. If you spot something interesting on the water — wildlife, unusual conditions, or something worth noticing — send it our way. We love sharing what people are seeing out there. #spottedatsea #miamiwaterkeeper #biscaynebay #miamiwaterways #spotitshareitprotectit
