THMangrove forests are some of the most important nurseries in the ocean. Their tangled roots create a protected world where young fish, rays, and sharks can grow safely before heading into the open sea. For species like the lemon shark (Negaprion brevirostris), these shallow estuaries provide shelter, food, and the conditions young sharks need during their most vulnerable stage of life
Researchers in Panama have recently begun documenting juvenile lemon sharks in mangrove estuaries around Coiba, including genetically confirmed young-of-the-year individuals.
The discovery suggests these mangrove systems may serve as previously unrecognized nursery habitat for the species in the eastern Pacific.
