Panicle hydrangea pruning can really make or break the plant, and I’ve learned over time that the less pruning you do, the better the plant is. In the end, this plant would never be pruned in nature anyways 🤷🏻‍♂️ I’m excited to work on these trees and make them better for next year! #limelight #hydrangea #hydrangeatree #hydrangeapruning

Thinking about pruning your Limelight Hydrangeas in October? Here’s why you should hold off: Limelight hydrangeas bloom on new wood, so they won’t form buds until next spring. Pruning now won’t help and could leave them exposed to winter damage. The best time to prune is late winter or early spring, before new growth begins, for healthy blooms next year. However, feel free to snip off a few old blooms to create a cute fall bouquet! Those dried flowers can add a lovely touch indoors. Enjoy the blooms for fall décor, but save the heavy pruning for later! #gardening #gardeningtips #hydrangea #limelighthydrangea #pruning #pruninghydrangeas

Panicle Hydrangea Pruning: LIMELIGHT HYDRANGEAS from @provenwinners This hedge of 15 Limelight Hydrangeas was planted in 2018. Because this variety blooms on new wood, we like to prune them and shape them in late winter for the upcoming growing season. In the wet and cold northeast, we start by cutting all spent blooms off in the fall to prevent ice and snow from collecting of them and weighing the blooms down. This has led to branches snapping in the past. Once temperatures warm in late winter, we prune for shaping. You can see here that we count up three buds and cut. We also remove any branches thinner than a pencil, as well as any crossing or rubbing branches. Cutting this much off may seem extreme, but as you can see in the final photo, the hydrangeas respond very well to this treatment. #hydrangeapruning #limelighthydrangea #limelighthydrangeas #pruning #wintergardening #hydrangeahedge #hydrangeahedges #springcleanup

Most people prune smooth hydrangeas WRONG… here’s what actually works 👀 I cut mine back HARD every early spring (about 6 inches) and they come back bigger and fuller every year 🌸 Don’t be scared to prune them — they actually LOVE it. I also use a simple fertilizer that makes a huge difference in how full they grow. 👇 Comment “LINK” and I’ll send you my full hydrangea care guide + everything I use (Canada & US) Save this so you remember what to do each spring 📌 IMPORTANT! These types are for Smooth hydrangeas!! DO NOT do this to your big leaf macrophylla hydrangeas. Bought these ones from @terraathome and they are from @provenwinners

Pruning mophead and lacecap hydrangeas doesn’t have to be tricky! These beauties flower on old wood—last year’s growth—so don’t cut them back too hard, or you’ll lose your blooms. When to prune: Late winter to early spring (March to April in the UK), once the risk of severe frost has passed. How to prune: Remove dead flower heads just above a healthy pair of buds and thin out any weak or damaged stems from the base. Leave strong, healthy stems intact! Remember, I’m in the UK—pruning times may vary depending on where you are. Let me know if you’ve got any questions! #Hydrangeas #PruningTips #gardening #UKGardening

Prune those hydrangeas for big beautiful blooms! Here’s the deal: different hydrangea have different rules to pruning. If you have a “panicle” variety, like these Limelight hydrangea shown here in this video, you should prune them back to a third of their height - YES, even if it’s only been one season. Start training them to have a strong, sturdy base asap or else it will grow weak and you’ll get spindly plants. Another common family of hydrangea are the marcophylla varieties (Big Leaf, Endless Summer, generally the blue or pink blooming varieties). These only need to be dead headed and not fully cut back. Any questions? Ask in the comments! #hydrangea #pruning #gardenhowto

Hydrangeas like limelight, little lime, quickfire, bobo, etc. are panicles or paniculata. These can get HUGE and I see them planted very close to houses, walkways and other shrubs frequently. I believe this is a dwarf variety but even those can get large so radical pruning each spring is required to keep them in check. They form their buds during the early summer so pruning in early spring is a good time to do it. Typical size for panicles is around 8-10 feet wide and new stems can grow a lot in one season so be careful. This space is probably too tight for this plant but it’s better than the rose of Sharon, which can also get huge, and this client already has the plant with no where else to put it so I think this approach is the way to go here but she may need to get rid of it later if it becomes too much. If you have recently planted one of these and are now realizing it will likely be too big for the space, move it as soon as possible. If you’re wondering about your big leaf/macrophylla hydrangea, these can also get wide but I would not recommend this kind of pruning because you will be cutting off a lot of buds. Instead, cut off only the amount you need to, to keep it contained. Buds for these are formed in the fall for the following summer. ✨Save and share with someone who grows limelight hydrangeas Pruning Lime Light Hydrangeas For most of the plants in my landscape I refer to the experts for their maintenance. I purchased my lime lights from @provenwinners (not a sponsored post I just love their hydrangeas). The recommended time to prune lime lights is late winter or early spring. I love the look of the dried blooms in the landscape thus I leave them as long as possible. I also use the dried blooms in Fall and Winter floral arrangements. ⚠️ Not all hydrangeas require pruning as some grow on old wood. If you are not sure please do your research and look up your plants first. I am located in zone 8a and prune as soon as I see the first sign of hydrangeas buds. This is a great time to prune as I can clearly see where to cut. The recommendation for pruning lime lights is to cut only 1/3 of the plant’s branches back. Anything more can result in weak branches and unable to hold the weightof large blooms. As lime lights bloom on new wood, over cutting can also result in little to no blooms. Using sharp and clean pruning shears, I like to cut at a 45 degree angle just above the bud. Working with heavy clay soil, I add fresh organic matter like rich organic compost and top with a balanced slow release fertilizer. If you are unsure of what fertilizer to use, I go with the one from @provenwinners since they are the grower. You can find it on their website or Amazon. Again this is not a sponsored post. I just love their plants. I hope this simple video was of some assist to someone🌱 #pruning #hydrandeas #limelight

Don’t get me wrong. I definitely think that you should grow limelight hydrangeas. I live in Texas and I feel like these are the best hydrangeas to grow here. I’m no expert but the one thing I’ve learned about growing these hydrangeas is that they get bigger and bigger every year! So if you’re planning to plant some this year, make sure you’re prepared for how big they’re going to get when deciding a location for them. We will probably have to transplant and move ours after this season because they’re going to cover the front of our house. In the meantime, I’m just going to pick them up and bring them in #homeinspo #limelighthydrangea #cottagestyle #garden #springdecor
