⚠️SCAM ALERT⚠️ From the OPP The Upper Ottawa Valley Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is currently investigating after a victim in the @townofpetawawa area recently lost over $4000 through the bank investigator scam. In a bank investigator scam, fraudsters impersonate online merchants, bank staff, or law enforcement, claiming your account is compromised in order to pressure you into transferring funds-often via Bitcoin-to a “secure” account or digital wallet to protect your assets. They create artificial urgency, often instructing victims to use Bitcoin ATMs and to keep the “investigation” a secret. • Financial institutions or online merchants will never request you to transfer funds to an external account. • If you get a call claiming to be from your financial institution, advise the caller that you will call them back. End the call and dial the number on the back of your bank or credit card from a different phone if possible or wait 10 minutes before making the outgoing call. • Fraudsters use call-spoofing technology to mislead victims. Do not assume that phone numbers appearing on your call display are accurate. • Never provide remote access to your computer or smart phone. It you or someone you know is a victim of bank investigator fraud, contact your local police service and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 (toll free) or report online at www.antifraudcentre.ca. You can also call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or report the incident online at www.valleytips.ca. #kNOwFraud

Is that URGENT text actually from your bank? 🏦Scammers love to create a false sense of urgency. They'll tell you your account is locked or a suspicious transfer is happening right now to make you panic. If it feels off, don't respond. 🚫 Never click the link in a random message. Go directly to your Mobile Banking App or contact the credit union to verify. Your money is yours - let's keep it that way! #scam #beware #fraudfriday

🚨 Fraud Alert: New Scam Targeting Bank Customers 🚨 We’re seeing a new scam affecting customers at banks nationwide — including ours. Here’s how it works: Scammers send a text that looks like it’s from the Bank about a debit card transaction. Once you reply, they call you pretending to be bank staff and try to get your personal information. Protect yourself: ✔️ If something feels off, hang up. ✔️ Call us back at our main office (800-837-8111) during business hours. ✔️ For after-hours fraud support call the MasterCard Fraud Department at 800-262-2024. Remember — the Bank will NEVER ask for: ❌ Online banking username or password ❌ PIN ❌ Full account numbers ❌ Full debit card number If someone asks for this information, it’s a scam. Stay safe and stay alert! Please keep in mind that our legitimate automated fraud alert text messages will come from a verified number, such as a five-digit code. It will not come from a ten-digit phone number. If you’re unsure about a message or call, reach out to us directly.
