A linking verb is a type of verb that connects the subject of a sentence to more information about it, rather than showing an action.
What it does
Instead of describing what the subject does, a linking verb describes what the subject is or what it is like.
Common linking verbs
The most common ones come from forms of the verb “to be”:
am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been
Other linking verbs include:
seem
become
appear
feel
look
sound
taste
smell
Examples
She is a teacher. → (“is” links she to teacher)
The soup tastes good. → (“tastes” links soup to good)
He became tired. → (“became” links he to tired)
