What happens to a developing brain when it rarely gets to experience autonomy, risk, problem-solving, and self-direction? Children have far less independent, self-directed play than they used to. Many children grow up in environments almost entirely orchestrated by adults. From wake-up to bedtime, they are often moved from one adult-led task to another. For older children, that can look like packed schedules, constant supervision, homework, lessons, sports, screens. Independent play activates critical brain systems: • Executive function • Emotional regulation • Creativity • Risk assessment • Social negotiation When children invent their own games, navigate small disagreements, climb something slightly challenging, or build something that collapses and try again, their brain is wiring resilience. Play is neurological training. When children only operate under adult direction, their brains may not get enough opportunities to practice: “I can handle this.” “I can figure this out.” “I can recover.” Those phrases matter. They are the foundation of mental health. Safety is non-negotiable. Control is optional. You can supervise without directing. You can be present without narrating every move. You can allow struggle without abandoning. When children are allowed independent, self-directed play, they build: Internal motivation instead of external validation. Frustration tolerance instead of fragility. Confidence instead of constant approval-seeking.They experience manageable stress followed by recovery. Independent play is not an indulgence. It is preparation. Preparation for handling stress. Preparation for handling emotion. Preparation for handling life. But the solution is not complicated. It is quieter. More mud. More sticks. More self-directed imagination. Less adult choreography. Let them build the crooked tower. Let them negotiate the rules. Let them get bored long enough to invent something. You are not stepping back because you don’t care. You are stepping back because you believe they are capable. You've probably gotten really good at noticing when your child is dysregulated. But when did you last notice when they weren't? The hum while they play. The weight of them leaning into you. Running over to show you something completely random. That's regulation. That's safety. #childregulation #nervousystemregulation #coregulation #childdevelopment #playbasedlearning #parentingadvice #emotionalregulation #theplayway #earlychildhood #parentingsupport

Here’s why we care more about regulation than early academics. Early academics can be taught. But regulation is foundational. When a child is dysregulated, learning is harder. It is harder to focus. Harder to listen. Harder to adapt. Harder to connect. But when a child feels safe, connected, and supported, their brain becomes more available for learning. At @sensoryseedlings, we care more about social emotional learning in the early years. We care more about kindness & empathy. We care about co-regulation. We care about helping children build the skills to pause, recover, and respond instead of constantly living in overwhelm. We care more about giving them the foundation to actually thrive for long term success. When a child can regulate, everything else becomes easier to teach. And that matters more to us than early academics ever will. #ChildDevelopment #EmotionalRegulation #ParentingTips #EarlyChildhood #MentalHealth ChildWellness ParentingAdvice SelfRegulation ChildPsychology HolisticLearning FrustrationTolerance ChildEducation SensorySeedlings CalmChildren

Lately I've been thinking a lot about play in the primary years. When do children stop playing? There's often a push for kids to grow up faster than they should. But play is still incredibly important. Through play, children practice the skills they need for life - communication, creativity, problem-solving and resilience. So if your child child still loves to play...keep encouraging it! 😄 #playmatters #playbasedlearning #parentinginsights #primaryyears #childdevelopment

I do. I’m Alana 👋 Early years educator of 20+ years, mum to three, and the person parents usually find after they’ve tried every activity idea, toy rotation, and screen-time bargain going. Most children aren’t refusing to play. They’re either not developmentally ready yet — or the conditions aren’t right. I don’t teach children to “play nicely” or “entertain themselves.” I show you how to work with the way your child’s brain already wants to play — so independent play becomes possible without bribery, guilt, or burning yourself out. Here you’ll learn: • why your child can’t play independently yet (and it’s not because you’re doing it wrong) • how a short burst of connection does most of the work • how to offer play that genuinely holds attention • how to rely less on screens without just surviving the day I’ve used this with thousands of children in early years settings — and I practise it daily with my own 5, 4 and 1 year old. If you’re done feeling confused and want clear, practical support that works in real homes… Follow along 🤍 And comment PLAY if you want to find out HOW your child’s brain is wired to play — because that’s where independent play starts. #independentplaytime #learningthroughplay #playathomeideas #toddlersofinstagram #earlyyearsideas

Play is great, don’t get me wrong. But not all play is created equal. Free play where your child uses their imagination, creativity, and whatever is available is amazing for development. It absolutely has a time and place. But if you want your child to be ready for school, there is more you can be doing to prepare them. And yes, it can still feel like play to them. I don’t believe in pushing worksheets on young children. That doesn’t prepare them. I believe in building real skills through intentional play. That can look like: Building number fluency by counting forwards, backwards, and even skip counting Working on 1:1 correspondence by touching each toy car as they count and drive it off Using play to naturally build language, problem solving, and focus It’s still play. Just with purpose. If you want more ideas on how to build real skills through play, comment PLAY ❤️ intentional play, early learning, school readiness, play based learning, number sense, one to one correspondence, preschool skills, kindergarten readiness, learning through play, child development

I’m an early years advisor… but at home I’m also mum to three little ones, and these are the simple things I do every day to help my children play independently. Not complicated activities. Not perfectly set up playrooms. Just small shifts that work with how children are naturally driven to play. Because when we understand the pattern beneath our child’s play, something amazing happens… Play gets deeper. Children stay with it longer. And suddenly you’re not the one responsible for entertaining them all day. That’s what I share here — simple ways to support the way children are biologically driven to play. Follow along if you want: • simpler play • more independent children • and a little more breathing space in your day And if you want to understand your child’s play pattern, comment PLAY and I’ll show you how. #independentplay #playislearning #childdevelopment #screenfreeplay

The “school experience” isn’t the only experience that matters. And it’s definitely not the one that builds the strongest learners. Free play isn’t just fun. 👉🏼It’s an advantage. When children have time to play freely, they’re not “doing nothing.” They’re developing: – creativity – problem-solving – emotional regulation – social skills – decision-making – a sense of control over their own lives That’s not extra. That’s foundational. Because when play disappears, something else shows up: More anxiety. More disconnection. Less creativity. Less curiosity. Play is not a break from learning. Play is how the brain learns best.🧠 So no… They’re not missing out. They’re gaining something most children don’t get enough of anymore. ❤️ Tell me in the comments: What does your child naturally choose to do when no one is directing them? That’s where the real learning is happening. #playislearning #playisimportant #playistheworkofchildhood #freedomtolearn #howchildrenlearn
