EPDid you know how modern coal mines can cut coal almost like shaving a wall while the roof is supported automatically? ⛏️⚙️
In modern longwall mining, a machine called a shearer moves along the coal face with sharp cutting drums and scrapes the coal off the wall. The broken coal drops straight onto an armored face conveyor, which carries it away continuously. At the same time, massive powered hydraulic roof supports hold up the roof right next to the working area and advance step by step as the coal face moves forward. This creates a highly controlled mining line where cutting, support and transport all work together in one rhythm. 
What makes this so impressive is the safety logic behind it. Instead of leaving miners exposed under unsupported rock, modern longwall systems are designed so automation, roof support and conveyor flow reduce direct exposure at the coal face. That is why these systems became the standard for high-output underground coal mining.

MOFrom dropping down the elevator to riding nearly 3 miles into the earth, touring Enlow Fork Mine was one of the coolest experiences I’ve had in a long time.
Seeing a longwall system in person , especially the longwall shearer, completely changed my perspective on coal mining. This isn’t the dark, dangerous, outdated version most people picture from the early 1900s, this operation is modern, highly engineered, and incredibly well maintained.
One thing that stood out immediately was how clean and controlled everything felt. The white powdered limestone (rock dust) is applied throughout the mine to suppress coal dust and help prevent explosions, and you can really see the difference it makes. Between that and the advanced ventilation systems, I felt surprisingly safe the entire time underground.
A few things that blew my mind:
– The Enlow Fork Mine is one of the largest underground coal mines in the U.S.
– Longwall mining here can produce tens of thousands of tons of coal per day
– The scale underground feels like its own city. Massive, organized, and constantly moving
But beyond the facts, this trip was so much fun and I made some new friends. There’s something wild about being that far underground, surrounded by heavy equipment, and seeing firsthand how much skill and coordination it takes to keep everything running.
I walked out of there with a whole new respect for the people who do this every day. I could defiantly see myself doing it, too. I’d like to say thank you to the CORE team for hosting the event and allowing me to partake. It had such a wonderful time.

MIHow does longwall mining improve coal recovery compared to room and pillar mining?
Room and pillar and longwall are two dominant methods that account for the vast majority of underground coal mining (Kanchwala, 2018).
In room and pillar mining, seams of the coal are mined partially, leaving large pillars of coal intact in a bid to support the overlying layers of rock.
In contrast, longwall mining involves cutting long tunnels into a coal seam and removing the extracted coal using an arrangement of conveyor belts. A temporary hydraulic support system is installed to hold the rock ceiling in place as the miners and machinery move along the coal seam(Kanchwala, 2018).
Longwall mining is a very efficient coal producing technique. It’s productivity is potentially higher than that of room-and-pillar mining, because longwall mining is basically a continuous operation requiring fewer workers and allowing a high rate of production to be sustained (Pontus, n.d.).

TUVarious underground mining methods are employed depending on geological conditions. One prominent technique is longwall mining, particularly utilised in coal and other flat-lying deposits. In longwall mining, a continuous mining machine known as the shearer traverses back and forth along the face of a coal seam, cutting slices of ore. As the shearer advances, hydraulic supports, called shields, are installed to hold up the roof. Conveyor belts transport the extracted ore to the surface for processing. Longwall mining offers high productivity and extraction rates, making it suitable for thick, uniform deposits with minimal geological disturbances. However, it requires careful planning to manage subsidence and ground control issues effectively.
