Learning how to read the Mahjong card is a skill, similar to learning how to read a language. Think of the lines like you would think about a sentence.
Sentences are split into words. Words are separated by spaces. If we didn’t have the spaces, we wouldn’t know where some words began or ended. And our sentences would sound all jumbled up.
The same is true about lines on the Mahjong card. Lines are made up of melds. They have spaces between them to tell players where one meld begins and ends. We read and build one meld at a time to form our line.
And what’s more? The parentheses tell a story. If we keep reading beyond the line, we see that the parentheses tell us more ways to build the line.
Every line has a story. Is it a story about evens? Odds? Winds? Read the story, meld by meld.
