ROCheckmate! Well, not quite, but my first play with the @manifold.research.centre Manifold Tetragrid Eurorack Gate Sequencer that I picked up from the wonderful @signal_sounds It’s an inspirational module that offers you a chance to ‘play’ the board with these magnetic pins, and produce rhythms and pulses that might never imagine creating. Here it is ‘pinging’ the @makenoisemusic QPAS module, that’s to say making it ring out in this insectoid-like manner. This looks set to offer some truly wild sonic opportunities in the making of new music. I can’t wait to dig in more with my little portable @intellijel modular palette case

ROIn November 2023, I joined the team at @hetconcreet in Tilburg, The Netherlands, for a week-long residency. Het Concreet is a Dutch sound collective dedicated to finding new sounds by experimenting with analog electronic devices, magnetic tape and acoustics. Their analogue ambitions are rooted in their studio space, where they seek to find new meanings of sound by working with techniques that have become largely obsolete in today’s world. Their main instrument is magnetic tape, which was a wonder to behold. Being able to create tape loops on this handsome Tascam machine was an utter joy. I brought along a very minimal set of my own musical toys, using the @makenoisemusic and @alehan Strega, the @lorre_mill Keyed Mosstone, and @somasynths Ether. I was also delighted to discover the local Elektor Formant synthesiser, a vintage Dutch synth handmade by Jos van Ras. We collaborated over a number of days, as well as participating in a wonderfully ambitious 12-hour broadcasting marathon that explored radio as a compositional tool, and included contributions from Margherita Brillada, Veerle Pennock, Clara Byom, Bas van Druten, Nele Möller, Marieke van de Ven, Sharon Stewart, and was hosted by Steph Byrne. OOThe Vertice! What is this beautiful machine?
It is hard to just define it as a Filter bank, it is a fascinating piece of engineering that seems to have its own will.
To use it , you need to surrender a little to its raw power.
I was going to do a very technical demo, a complex one, but then I realized this is an instrument created to play and have fun, so
I will show you how I enjoy using it.
In this setup I am using the Vertice to sum 3 outputs from the Rytm, 2 dual OSC and an impulse machine. I am sequencing the filters VC with Make
Noise 0 -CTRL and then pass everything through my favorite pedal, Meris mercury X.
Udo Super-6 comes after a while with a detuned pad.
