A legend says it is the gift our Lord gave to the humble donkey that carried Him into Jerusalem. According to the legend, th little donkey so loved his Master that he followed Him to Calvary. Grief-striken at the sight, he turned away but remained at his station at the foot of the cross. Donkeys have been mentioned throughout the Bible and were chosen on many occasions to accompany Jesus in his journeys. The Donkey is a humble, kind natured creature that in today’s world, gets very little attention. 🫏 However, they were chosen by God over all the other animals to accompany him to Jerusalem. I never knew how special Donkeys were, until we got our own to love. They are so loving and kind when they are treated with respect. They are very intelligent, strong, and form strong bonds. A Biblical quote, along with their legend. “Bring me the colt of a Donkey “, was the Master’s request. A young Donkey was brought to Jesus to carry him through Jerusalem A week later Jesus was ordered to be crucified. The little Donkey so loved the Lord that he wanted to help him carry the cross But alas, he was pushed away. The sad little Donkey waited to say goodbye until nearly all had left. As he turned to leave, the shadow of the cross fell across his back and shoulders, and there it has remained. A tribute to the loyalty and love of one of the humblest of all Gods creatures. ~We are deeply honored to care for such beautiful animals❣️ 🫏🫏🫏🫏🫏 Happy Easter 🌸🌼💕

“The Master has need of them.” Jesus told his disciples to explain why they were untying a donkey and her colt. Jesus needed a donkey for the most important ride in history. Tradition says that donkeys are marked with a cross to commemorate being chosen for this service. What a lovely thought, isn’t it? God still has need of donkeys... not just the four legged kind, but the two legged ones. You and me. The ones who seem least likely to succeed, the ones whose service often goes unnoticed and unappreciated. We too are marked...by love, by serving others, by humble presence. We are given a divine purpose to carry out, and though we sometimes balk at it we always choose to follow through— because He has chosen us for it. As donkeys, we are called to carry peace, the Prince of Peace, into the world. As I was jogging today, I passed a donkey along the side of the road. And it made me think about Palm Sunday last week… how Jesus chose to ride into Jerusalem on a donkey. Not anything like a King would ride or much less be seen on as he entered a city… But, rather he chose total humility. He chose as a servant would ride and enter. While knowing only a few days later he would be crucified and hang on a cross for all. I’d heard that donkeys have been marked with the cross on their backs ever since as a reminder, including this one. Have you ever noticed the cross on a donkeys back? What a humble and poignant image for me to see today… What a holy reminder of the sacrifice Jesus made for us on this Good Friday. Matthew 21: 1-3 1 As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. 3 If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.” Matthew 21: 6-7 6 The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. I’m guessing that idea is relatable. 😭❤️ As the story goes, the shadow of the cross fell across its back, and has remained there ever since. Just permanently marked into their fur. That dark line down their spine… the one across their shoulders… a cross, still carried today. And some say the soft white markings near their ears are where Jesus once held on, yet another gentle reminder of the One who chose humility, not a throne. Who bore our sins. Who loved us so. Legend or not… it’s hard not to see it. A quiet symbol woven into one of the most humble, steady, faithful animals. And maybe that’s the point… He didn’t come in power.
