DRSuperior mesenteric artery syndrome (SMAS) is rare — and that’s part of the problem.
It most often shows up in people with hypermobility or significant weight loss, where the normal fat cushion that protects the intestine disappears.
Symptoms usually start 1–2 hours after eating, especially fibrous or fatty foods (think salads or gristly meats).
The pain is often near the belly button, paired with nausea, early fullness, and food avoidance.
Over time, this can lead to progressive weight loss, which makes the compression worse.
Because SMAS isn’t commonly seen, many people undergo multiple endoscopies and imaging tests that come back “normal” before the diagnosis is finally made.
Rare doesn’t mean imaginary.
And sometimes, pain has a structural cause that’s easy to miss if you’re not looking for it.
