Developed in 1569, the Mercator projection was a revolutionary tool for sailors, but itโs not the best way to measure true land areas, since our planet is spherical.
As the map stretches closer to the poles, countries like ๐ท๐บ Russia appear much larger than they really are. The effect is most dramatic in high-latitude regions, where distortions can make entire continents look unrecognizably huge.
For example, on a Mercator map, ๐ฌ๐ฑ Greenland looks about the size of Africa, but ๐ Africa is actually 14 times larger. This distortion isnโt just a cartographic quirk โ it clearly shapes our mental image of the world.
