Bu yüzden “kusursuz” bir dünya haritası yapmak matematiksel olarak mümkün değildir.

Ancak konu sadece matematik değildir. Harita projeksiyonları tarih boyunca siyasi ve kültürel etkiler de taşımıştır. Örneğin 16. yüzyılda geliştirilen Mercator projeksiyonu, denizcilik için çok kullanışlıydı çünkü yönleri doğru gösteriyordu. Bu özellik Avrupa’nın deniz aşırı keşifler ve sömürgecilik döneminde işine yaradı. Fakat bu projeksiyon kutuplara yaklaştıkça alanları büyüttüğü için Avrupa ve Kuzey Amerika olduğundan daha büyük görünürken, Afrika ve Güney Amerika daha küçük görünür. Bu da bilinçli olmasa bile dünyayı “merkezde ve büyük” görünen ülkeler lehine algısal olarak etkileyebilir.
