Perfect comparison of black cherry (Prunus serotina) and the non-native, often encountered mazzard cherry (Prunus avium) of Eurasia. I know I’ve compared these two before, but they’re so easy to mix up, and this side-by-side occurrence was too good to pass up, and it continues or week’s theme of “lenticels.” #tree #trees #gardening #arborist #horticulture

Yesterday we learned about lenticels and the effect they have on the bark of young stems. Here, we look at how they impact a mature stem, visually, as the bark is stretched. This is especially prominent in cherries and birches. #tree #trees #gardening #arborist #horticulture

Late winter isn’t downtime for trees. It’s tapping season. Maple trees are typically tapped from late February through March, when freezing nights and warmer days create pressure inside the trunk that pushes sap upward. This all happens before buds ever open. And it’s not just maples. Birch trees can be tapped too, slightly later in the season, typically late March into April, producing a darker, more mineral-rich syrup. Winter is quiet. Not inactive. #treefactfriday #nowyouknow #maple #maplesyrup #nature

Bright yellow wood inside a tree. This is the Amur cork tree. Its inner bark is naturally bright yellow. The color comes from berberine, a plant alkaloid. Berberine has strong antimicrobial properties. The bark has been used in Asian medicine for over 2000 years. cc: ssss52888 #nature #botany #plants #science

Yes, trees have pores. Those white stripes on Eastern Hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) needles are a group of “tree pores” or stomata. They allow the tree to exchange gases, and their waxy coating helps conserve water through winter. Have you seen stomata on Eastern Hemlock or other trees?

Native Tree Spotlight: Sugar Maple Add some sweetness to your yard this spring! In Michigan and the northeastern US, Sugar Maple trees aren’t just a fall favorite — they’re the heart of maple syrup season. Late winter and early spring bring the perfect freeze-thaw cycle for tapping, when sap flows and is collected to make the pure maple syrup we all know and love. A healthy sugar maple can be tapped sustainably for decades, making it both productive and beautiful. NOTE: We recommend tapping only once your tree achieves a DBH (diameter at breast height) of 10 - 18inches! Beyond syrup production, sugar maples are exceptional landscaping trees. Mature sugar maples provide dense summer shade that can help lower cooling costs, they present brilliant orange and red colors in autumn, and are long-lived, found in many of Michigan's mature 'climax' forests. They also support local wildlife by providing habitat and are well-suited to Michigan’s changing climate conditions, making them a smart landscaping option for the future. Plant a tree that delivers beauty, benefits, and a little Michigan sweetness for generations to come. #MapleSyrup #MapleSugaring #MapleSugar #MapleSeason #SugarBush #TapTree #Sap #PlantaTree #NativePlants #TreesforWater
