IT’S MAPLE TAPPING SEASON! (How to tap maple trees for maple syrup: SO EASY!) Yay!!!! It’s maple tapping season in Kentucky! This is only our second year tapping maple trees. 2023 was our first year and we LOVED IT! It’s surprisingly easy! :) But it does take a lot of time and the temperatures are important. It must be below freezing at night but above freezing during the day. Those temperature changes cause the pressure inside the tree that pushes the sap out. This is day 1 of a 7ish day process. We will update on each day of the process this week. It will show everything from tapping the trees to collecting the sap and making the maple syrup. Stay tuned! 🍁It’s maple tapping season🍁 Did you know that you can tap any maple tree for sap to boil into syrup, not just sugar maples? Other maples produce a little less sap, so it takes more to boil into what you want (about 50 gallons of sap makes a gallon of syrup). The sap runs best for tapping when the temperature is above freezing during the day, and below freezing at night, and before there are buds on the trees. It’s a very small window of time, and every year we are out around this time doing just this. Today we are going out with spiles, hose, and buckets, and getting things set up to collect. We will check the buckets every few days, and when we have enough sap, we will boil it down into our own maple syrup. I know I make pottery content, but I like sharing these parts of my life too. I’m learning things like maple tapping, bread making, sauerkraut making, etc, as the years go on. I like sharing things like this because I hope it inspires people to try doing things they’ve always wanted to try, whether it’s making refrigerator pickles, or making bread. #nature #mapletree #maplesyrup #mapletapping #upperpeninsula #wisconsin #yooper #slowliving #homesteading #yallternative

I started researching maple tree tapping years ago, but was always intimidated. I keep learning that sometimes you just have to go for it! So here we are after our first year. And ya know what… it worked! Here is what we learned part one.⠀ ⠀ 1. Maple tree identification in the winter- when there are no leaves on the trees it becomes much harder to identify them. Look for opposite branches and smooth bark when the tree is young and rough with moss growth when older. I will scout trees this summer and fall for easy identification next spring.⠀ ⠀ 2. I spent about 90 cents per tree on all equipment. We used the smallest PVC pipe we could find cut into 2 in sections for our tap, 5/8th tubing from the plumbing department for our longer line, a simple hook to hang the buckets and I asked our local bakery to save their two gallon frosting buckets and lids for me. Gallon ice cream buckets work well too.⠀ ⠀ 3. When drilling make sure that you have a slight upward angle so the sap can flow out, and won’t get stuck or flow backward. Drill about 4 ft up from the ground and don’t tap a tree that has a trunk smaller than a 5 gallon bucket. They are too young.⠀ ⠀ 4. Just go for it! Try the sap, let the kids help and don’t waste another season wondering if it will work. Try it! ⠀ ⠀ We are going to a maple syrup event this weekend and I would love to share more next week!
