This fallen Coast Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) gives us a really interesting look at the vascular tissue of these incredible trees! The cambium, or vascular tissue of a tree is created by two different types of tissue - the Phloem, which transports sugars down from the leaves as they photosynthesize, and the Xylem, which transports water to the leaves so that they can photosynthesize. The outermost layer of a tree, the bark, is created by old layers of the Phloem that push outwards as they age and fall out of use. The innermost layer of a tree, the heartwood, is created by old layers of Xylem as they age and fall out of use. The active layers of Xylem, just under the park, are known as the sapwood. Members of the Cupressaceae family like this Redwood are notorious for having high levels of volatile oils in both their bark and heartwood, which keeps insects, bacteria and fungi from breaking them down and causing rot that could lead to their demise, yet active sapwood tends to be lacking in those oils, leaving them open to colonization by decomposers. I’ve looked it up, and pretty sure those are a type of Sulphur Cap fungi working on that sapwood to begin that long decomposition process that these trees will all inevitably go through. Pretty neat! That “bleeding” you’re seeing is a classic Sudden Oak Death symptom. The exudate itself isn’t the pathogen leaking out—it’s the tree’s response to the infection and tissue breakdown. The pathogen (Phytophthora ramorum) infects the inner bark—killing the phloem and cambium, which are responsible for moving sugars and generating new growth. As that tissue dies, the tree responds by pushing out this dark, tannin-rich fluid from the canker. It’s basically a visible stress response to internal tissue death. #SuddenOakDeath #TreeHealth #ArboristLife #ForestPathology #PhytophthoraRamorum

Does this maple tree need to be removed? Not necessarily. At first glance, the tree may look concerning—but a closer evaluation tells a different story. The root flare is solid, which is a key indicator of stability. There are some cavities and deformities, but the tree is actively compartmentalizing them, meaning it’s managing the damage effectively. The tree also has a noticeable lean, but this appears to be a natural growth pattern toward sunlight—likely influenced by surrounding trees that were once present. This type of lean is not always a structural issue. Additionally, the branch unions are strong, and the overall canopy appears healthy. Tree risk assessment is about understanding the full picture—not just reacting to what looks concerning. I see trees like this fairly often throughout Westchester County NY and Fairfield County CT, particularly in areas like Scarsdale, Bedford, Greenwich, and New Canaan. Bright yellow wood inside a tree. This is the Amur cork tree. Its inner bark is naturally bright yellow. The color comes from berberine, a plant alkaloid. Berberine has strong antimicrobial properties. The bark has been used in Asian medicine for over 2000 years. cc: ssss52888 #nature #botany #plants #science

How should a red maple tree actually be assessed? Proper tree evaluation goes beyond just looking at the canopy. Arborists use techniques like sounding and probing to assess internal wood condition and determine how much solid structure remains. If these steps aren’t being performed, it may be worth getting a second opinion. In this example, the red maple is doing something important—it’s compartmentalizing previous pruning wounds, which is a positive sign of health. At this stage, the recommended approach is fairly minimal: • remove minor dead branches • support the tree with proper soil care Tree assessment is about understanding both structure and biology. I perform these types of evaluations throughout Westchester County NY and Fairfield County CT, particularly in areas like Scarsdale, Bronxville, Greenwich, and Westport. Tree Term: Root Flare The root flare is the point where a tree’s trunk widens and transitions into its major roots. It’s key to the health and longevity of your trees that this is visible above ground. When a root flare is buried (often from excess mulch or soil buildup), the tree can develop decay, pest issues, girdling roots, and long-term structural instability. Quick check: If your tree looks like a straight “telephone pole” going into the ground, the root flare may be buried, and the tree may need some extra care.

The first trees I planted were black walnut. If I could go back to 2011, I’d plant way more curly poplar. I didn’t know about this variety at the time, but now you do. Here’s a tutorial on pruning broadleaf timber trees. If you own or manage non-forested land, comment “Curly” and I’ll send you more information about this tree.
