GEMany people get confused about the difference between New York, New York City, Manhattan and Long Island. 🗽 New York is one of the 50 U.S. states, divided into 62 counties and five of them are unique because together they form New York City 🌆 NYC is the largest city in the state, even though the capital is surprisingly Albany and about 8.5 million people live here, nearly half of the state’s population. These five counties are called boroughs: the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island, each with its own court, prosecutor and administration ⚖️ Manhattan is the most iconic borough, home to Central Park, the Empire State Building, Broadway, Wall Street and the Statue of Liberty, which legally belongs to Manhattan even though it sits closer to New Jersey 🌇 Long Island is a completely different island with Brooklyn and Queens on its western side, while Nassau and Suffolk counties, often what people mean by “Long Island” are not part of New York City🗽
