The Mahalaxmi Temple is one of the most significant shrines within the Jagannath Temple complex in Puri. Located in the northwestern corner of the inner enclosure (Kuruma Bedha), it is not just a place of worship but a central pillar of the unique culture and "divine drama" of Puri. The idol of Goddess Mahalaxmi is carved from black chlorite stone. She is depicted in the Gajalakshmi form, seated in a lotus posture (Padmasana) with four arms, while two elephants sprinkle water over her from golden pots. It is firmly believed that she personally supervises the cooking of the Chhapana Bhog. If she is displeased, the food is said to lose its divine flavour or even turn "impure" before being offered.
