Small group instruction can feel like the most overwhelming part of Math Workshop. It’s easy to think you need a different plan for every group and somehow keep it all running perfectly. But it’s really not about doing more. It’s about creating space for students to think, talk, and make sense of what they’re doing. When you simplify the approach, small groups start to feel a lot more doable… and a lot more impactful. If you want to learn more about small groups, I’m sending a newsletter out tomorrow all about how to best utilize and structure small group instruction! We can’t expect students to feel confident with math if they don’t truly understand what numbers mean. These four foundations 👉 subitizing, verbal counting, object counting, and cardinality👉 are what make everything else possible. (There are 8 Number Sense concepts total, I’ll cover the other 4 in another post). When we slow down and build meaning first, students don’t just do math… they actually understand it. If you’re looking for simple, meaningful ways to strengthen these foundations in your classroom, I’d love to support you. 👉 Visit BuildMathMinds.com

Comment MATH to get this routine + more like it 👇 This 10-second floor skip counting routine finally built number fluency with my students 🙌 Start with any number. Stand in a circle. Skip count by 2s, 5s, or 10s. That’s it. But here’s what it actually does: ✔️ Builds automaticity with numbers ✔️ Strengthens mental math ✔️ Lays the foundation for addition + multiplication ✔️ Gets every student actively thinking (and moving!) It’s quick, it’s engaging, and your students don’t even realize how much math they’re doing 🔥 Comment MATH and I’ll send you this routine + more fast, effective ideas to boost number fluency 💡 #math #mathgames #mathroutines

Stations can look amazing. Students moving. Activities changing. Groups rotating. From the outside it looks like differentiation is happening. But inside the classroom something else is often happening. Some students finish quickly. Some students wait for help. Some students quietly learn that math is something other kids are good at. Meanwhile teachers are working incredibly hard to keep everything moving. Managing materials. Answering questions. Trying to reach every group. And at the end of it all you’re exhausted. Not because you didn’t plan well. But because the structure of it is asking you to hold everything together. A lot of teachers feel this — they just don’t always talk about it or even know there is a different way to reach all learners. Let’s expire using “key words” as a strategy for solving word problems. It teaches kids to isolate words that don’t necessarily have to do with the mathematical concept. Instead, we need to support kids in building conceptual understanding through visual modeling. This is NOT the same as teaching them mathematical terminology. We can teach them the meaning of terms without isolating them and attaching them to specific operations. Using games in the math classroom completely changed how I approach teaching math. ✅ Before: I used to feel stuck trying to keep students engaged during lessons, constantly battling distractions, behaviour management and math anxiety (kids shutting down and giving up) in the classroom. ✅ After: Introducing and regularly playing strategy based games, math time became a fun, collaborative experience where students are eager to participate, build their confidence, and get in their purposeful practice- with joy! 💡 Games aren’t just “fun extras”—they’re tools for accessing content, fostering deep understanding, and a love for learning math. Through play, I’ve seen students come alive, connect with their peers, and realize their potential in ways I never imagined! Try it for yourself! Start simple: pick one strategy based math game this week and observe the engagement! 👉 Want support bringing these games into the classroom? You know what I hated the most during small group time in math? Keeping the rest of the class on task! No more wandering around the room, asking what to do next, sharpening pencils, everything but doing math! Until I created my choice boards and my early finishers knew just what to do! There’s so much math in simple materials—if we slow down enough to listen for it. This was just a simple egg carton, but our kindergarteners noticed patterns, counted, described shapes, and even talked about symmetry… all on their own. Most teachers teach telling time… and students still don’t really get it. Because worksheets ≠ real life. So I started doing this instead… I randomly say, “Look at the clock!” throughout the day and students have to record the time. Suddenly… ✔ they’re paying attention ALL day ✔ they’re actually applying the skill ✔ and they think it’s a game (Wait until the end… 🥹) This is the kind of practice that actually sticks. We’ve started composing and decomposing teen numbers in math and we knew our @mathstackers Small Group Mini Magnets would be perfect to help reinforce these skills. We grabbed some paper and wrote in number bonds and equations. Students used the magnets to fill in missing parts. These activities always give students many opportunities to build their math thinking and we love all the hands on exploration!
