The power of rhyme! How many can you identify from this mixtape of toddller bangers? 🤣 "Children who know nursery rhymes by heart have a better phonological foundation for reading" (Bryant et al, 1989). It's even suggested that if children know eight nursery rhymes by the time they are four they are better readers and spellers by the time they are eight years old (Mem Fox, 2008) Nursery rhymes expose children to important speaking and listening skills which lie at the foundation of phonics. Learning to read starts way before children start to match letters with their sounds. Don't feel pressured to rush ahead and teach two year olds to recite letters and read words at the detriment of supporting these key phonological awareness skills. The other great thing about nursery rhymes is that they require absolutely no resources and they are portable so you can sing in the car, before bed, in the bath, garden and with Mum, Dad, siblings, grandparents, aunties, uncles and friends! How many nursery rhymes do you know by heart? I’ve had a few messages asking for simple song suggestions when you’ve exhausted all the normal nursery rhymes. So, here’s the start of a series of nursery rhymes but with different words! Episode 1: Twinkle Twinkle, but make it maths ✨🎶 Suddenly we’re learning counting, size and ordinal numbers through song. When you use a familiar tune like Twinkle Twinkle, children aren’t working hard to learn the melody as they already know it. That frees up brain space to focus on the new learning: • First, second, third (ordinal numbers) • Counting • Size (smallest, middle, biggest) • Hearing number patterns in rhythm The melody acts like a scaffold and because it’s sung, not spoken, the information sticks. This song will quietly support numeracy, pitch and rhythm: in the car, at bedtime, or while brushing teeth.
