Itโ€™s one lane, full of curves, and no guard rail between you and the steep overhang. Itโ€™s definitely do-able, we say many small cars make the drive - but would HIGHLY recommend 4WD during snow or after rain. Some fun facts about PNF: ๐ŸŒณ Founded in 1916, itโ€™s one of the original east coast national forests. ๐ŸŒป Itโ€™s over 500,000 acres and contains at least 46,000 acres of old growth. ๐ŸƒOver 5 million people visit Pisgah every year, making it one of the most popular National Forests in the country. ๐ŸŒผ For conservation information and to oppose the recent Forest Service plan to start opening up areas of Pisgah National Forest to logging, visit: iheartpisgah.org Hike info: For this beautiful Friday hike, we hit up the Max Patch loop of the Appalachian Trail. We started in the Harmonโ€™s Den area of PNF and stopped to check out some roadside waterfalls and creeks along the way! We also made sure to pick up litter (๐Ÿคฌ) everywhere we went.. so many beer cans, take out containers, water bottles, and just garbage left around (wtf). The trail itself is about a mile and a half loop but you can easily add an out-and-back by hopping on the AT for a bit. Itโ€™s a pretty steady incline up to the summit but once you get there, itโ€™s a huge meadow with the most breathtaking 360 views. When @metrocabanas & @arianabortonโ€™s roomie @lina_mariaa called me to plan his proposal to Ariana one of them jokingly said, โ€œMaybe itโ€™ll snow!โ€ None of us could have predicted hiking up Max Patch in the dark in white out snow and high wind conditions in the single digits before wind chills, and Iโ€™m confident Ariana was confused as to why he wouldnโ€™t let her turn around because there was NOT going to be a sunrise (spoiler: there never was one, all we got was some light through the snow and clouds on 2-17-24). Fun fact; my lenses kept getting covered in a layer of ice and my water in my water bottle froze. It was uncomfortably cold and @wendyfrederickphotography and I lost track of the trail on the way to the bald (and I panicked) but they found us (well, he did) and he managed to keep the proposal a surprise even in the chaos of what we now all affectionately call #thetinyblizzard (ha). This was a once in a lifetime experience for so many reasons. & I wouldnโ€™t have chosen another group of people to experience it with (their friends were also SUCH GOOD SPORTS). Congrats again, you two. Thank you for toughing out the coldest weather Iโ€™ve ever worked in. & a special shout out to @wendyfrederickphotography - without whom I wouldnโ€™t have made it to the top. Truly. Like literally would have been lost and panic fainted in the tiny blizzard without her.
