WIBeltane (or Bealtaine) is a traditional Celtic festival marking the beginning of summer, celebrated around May 1st. It’s a time of fire, fertility, growth, and the union of energies—honoring the earth as it comes fully alive.
The maypole is one of its most recognized symbols: Traditionally, the maypole is danced with ribbons, symbolizing unity, fertility, and the weaving together of life’s energies.
This is my quiet version of that ritual—
something small, handmade, and rooted in intention.
✨Here’s my mini altar version ✨
DIY maypole:
– wood base + central stick
– weave a small branch wreath
– secure with twine
– attach to the top
– add ribbons
it doesn’t have to be perfect to be sacred

WIStarted with a mini maypole… and now we’re here ✨
Maypoles have been part of spring celebrations for centuries—symbolising fertility, growth, and new life.
The ribbons represent the weaving together of community and the turning of the seasons, and traditionally people would dance around the pole to celebrate warmth, abundance, and the arrival of summer.
For this one, I made a hoop using flexible branches (willow or hazel work best),
secured twine at four points, and added greenery by weaving it through.
Then I tied everything together at the top and added ribbons for that soft, flowing movement.
The pole is a birch stem—with a small slit at the top to hold the twine and keep the hoop in place.
I chose birch for its symbolism—renewal, protection, new beginnings—
but you can use anything you have.
Decorate it your way—wildflowers, fabric, whatever feels right.
I’ve also shared a mini version if space is limited 🌸

COWho doesn’t love a maypole? This is the first time we have made our own, getting readying for Beltane, a Celtic fire festival on 30th April- 1st May.
Maypoles represent fertility and the union of the Goddess and God.
The ribbons should be longer I realise but the cat thought it was one giant toy for her and had to trim the bits trailing in the grass . . .

The Maypole isn’t just a cute spring aesthetic moment - it’s actually an ancient fertility symbol. Like… deeply symbolic.
The pole represents divine masculine energy, and the ribbons weaving around it symbolize feminine energy, creation, and the sacred dance of life itself.
So when our ancestors were dancing around the Maypole, they were literally manifesting abundance, passion, and prosperity for the season ahead. Casual. 👀
