👁✨ Meet the Telescope Fish — one of the strangest hunters of the deep. Living 500–2000 meters below the surface, this elusive predator has rarely been seen alive. In 2001, MBARI’s ROV Tiburon filmed a pair drifting at 1214 meters near Hawaii — a once-in-a-lifetime sighting. With tubular eyes and massive lenses, the Telescope Fish is built to detect glowing prey in the pitch black. Its jaw can even swallow creatures larger than itself, while its body shimmers with a reflective guanine coating instead of scales. Its long, ribbon-like tail inspired its scientific name Gigantura. 📖 Rare footage like this helps scientists unlock the secrets of Earth’s most alien world — the deep sea. Meet the owlfish, a fascinating deep-sea dweller uniquely adapted to life in the abyss. With large, sensitive eyes designed to navigate the perpetual darkness, this enigmatic creature thrives in the depths of the North Pacific. Found at staggering depths of up to 6,000 meters (19,685 feet), the owlfish is a master of survival in one of Earth's most extreme environments. Its specialized adaptations allow it to hunt and thrive where few other species can. Captured by @mbari_news, this glimpse into the life of the owlfish reminds us of the incredible biodiversity hidden beneath the ocean's surface. 🌊🦉✨ #DeepSea #MarineLife #Owlfish #OceanExploration #MBARI

MBARI researchers have identified a remarkable new species of deep-sea sea slug, Bathydevius caudactylus. This glowing creature lives in the ocean’s midnight zone, where it swims gracefully and emits dazzling bioluminescence. At one end, it carries a voluminous, hood-like structure, while the other end features a flat tail edged with delicate, finger-like projections. Between these, its colorful internal organs shimmer, giving it a surreal appearance. With its unusual body plan, scientists initially struggled to classify the animal. Because it also possessed a snail-like foot, the team nicknamed it the “mystery mollusc.” The first sighting occurred in February 2000, when MBARI’s remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Tiburon encountered the creature 2,614 meters (8,576 feet) deep off Monterey Bay. Over the following two decades, MBARI’s cutting-edge ROVs recorded more than 150 encounters with this enigmatic animal, allowing researchers to study its behavior and publish a detailed description. Bathydevius caudactylus is just one of many extraordinary discoveries within the midnight zone. Using advanced deep-sea technology, MBARI has revealed more than 250 previously unknown species, opening windows into a world that remains one of Earth’s greatest mysteries. Sorry to bug you, but this giant isopod wants to meet you face to carapace! The giant isopod (Bathynomus giganteus) is a colossal crustacean that grows up to 16 inches (40 cm) and is found in the deep Atlantic Ocean, living 1600 feet (500m) and more below the ocean’s surface. Cousin to the backyard pillbug, Bathynomus is a connoisseur of carcasses. This adorable seafloor roomba senses its surroundings with large eyes and two sets of antennae to pick up the scent of some fresh carrion. The giant isopod roams the deep seafloor on 7 pairs of legs, with an occasional burst of speedy swimming from fluttering swimmerets, to feast on the remains of the deceased raining down from above. Because food fragments can be few and far between, they have adapted to eat as much as they can at one time, and then may not eat again for a year or more! We’re sure that many of you are fans of giant isopods already—but if you’re not yet convinced, check this out! You can see AND TOUCH giant isopods for yourself in our new exhibition, ”Into the Deep: Exploring Our Undiscovered Ocean”! The panda bear sea angel (Notobranchaea macdonaldi) is snail-relative known as a pteropod, or “wing-foot”. 🐼😇 Many pteropods have some form of shell (those are often known as “sea butterflies”)—sea angels do not. Sea angel pteropods are carnivorous hunters, tracking down sea butterflies and ensnaring them using hidden tentacles tucked away inside their head. 🦋 It's one of the sea creatures forming part of a collaboration to build ocean literacy, between Dr Karen Evans and @PipingHotAustralia. This is just one example of how Karen is using her expertise to influence and grow Ocean Decade-endorsed activities across Australia. ~°•🪼•°~ This animal has only been seen by MBARI (Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute) 9 times in 30 years! The Deep Sea is such a mysterious world🦑 MBARI researchers last encountered the giant phantom jelly (Stygiomedusa gigantea) in November 2021 during a dive in Monterey Bay. While exploring the midnight zone, this ghostly giant emerged from the darkness. The bell of this deep-sea denizen reaches more than one meter (3.3 feet) across and trails four ribbon-like oral (or mouth) arms that can grow more than 10 meters (33 feet) long 🫨 Research Technician Megan Bassett was on the R/V Western Flyer when the remotely operated vehicle Doc Ricketts spotted this Stygiomedusa at a depth of 990 meters, (3,200 feet). "It's hard for this beautiful giant not to be a favorite! The giant phantom jelly is a rare sight=-MBARI has only seen it nine times in more than 30 years of deep-sea exploration. I happened to be in the control room during the last sighting and spotted it in the distance. We spent the next hour or so filming and captured some amazing footage." 3,250 feet beneath the surface of Monterey Bay, researchers spotted a ghostly giant, the phantom jellyfish. Measuring up to 10 meters long, with a bell 3 feet wide, this deep-sea marvel drifts silently in the dark, rarely seen by human eyes. Its sheer size and eerie transparency make it feel more alien than earthly. Footage like this reminds us how little we truly know about our oceans. Fish are friends. 🐟 Scientists call this fish Hydrolagus trolli, but its common name is the pointy-nosed blue chimaera. Chimaeras are unusual fishes. Like sharks, their bodies are not stiffened by bones, but by plates and bone-like bits of cartilage. Similar to the chimaera from Greek mythology, which has a goat’s head, a serpent’s tail, and a lion’s body, chimaeras have a unique shape. Video observations of Hydrolagus cf trolli, the pointy-nosed blue ratfish, from the Northeast Pacific ocean represented a range extension for the species and were the first ever of this animal alive, in its natural habitat. The species was originally described from specimens collected off New Caledonia in 2002. It was named in honor of Alaskan artist Ray Troll because of his fascination and appreciation for this strange group of fishes known as chimaeras. #MBARI #DeepSea #Ocean #DeepOcean #chimaera #coolfish

The Giant Ostracod is around 3 cm big so why are they giants? While most ostracods are tiny, this species can grow up to 32 mm (1.3 inches) in length, making them significantly larger than their relatives, hence the name Giant. It's a deep-sea crustacean, a type of "seed shrimp," that stands out due to its large size and its unique adaptations for the dark, deep-sea environment.  They are found in the mesopelagic zone, the twilight zone of the ocean, at depths of 600-2,300 meters (2,000-7,500 feet).  Giant Ostracod (Gigantocypris agassizii) digital illustration.
