COIt might feel like being the “primary parent” should carry more weight, especially if you were the one home with the kids.
And that feeling makes sense.
I see both parties request the primary parent all the time. 
👉 The label “primary parent” doesn’t mean that one parent has more time with the kids and the other and it doesn’t mean that one parent has more decision-making.
There are two things happening that people mix together:
• your history as a caregiver
• and the legal standard for custody
Those are not the same thing.
Courts and mediators are not deciding based on who did more in the past.
They’re looking at:
✔️ what’s in the best interest of the child
✔️ stability
✔️ each parent’s ability to co-parent
✔️ what the day-to-day schedule actually looks like
So when you’re in a 50/50 situation…
That “primary parent” title?
It loses a lot of its weight.
Because at that point, it’s not about who did more before,
it’s about what actually works for your kids now.
And this is where people get stuck in mediation…
They keep trying to prove the past,
instead of building a plan for the future.
That’s the shift.
