1) Olympic-Level Athlete I have literally seen applicants who competed at the Olympics or at a national elite level in their sport. Even if it is not the Olympics, being at that high level shows insane discipline, time management, and resilience. Med schools know you cannot fake that kind of long term commitment. 2) Working with Incarcerated Populations Some applicants spent years volunteering or working inside prisons or with formerly incarcerated individuals. That kind of experience exposes you to complex social and health inequities that most premeds never see. It shows maturity, empathy, and a willingness to work with underserved communities in a very real way. 3) Chef or Catering Business Owner I have seen people who were professional chefs or started their own catering businesses before medicine. Running a food business takes leadership, customer service skills, and the ability to perform under pressure. It also makes for amazing interview stories because it is so different from the typical research assistant path. 4) Years of Industry Experience as an Engineer or Computer Scientist Some applicants worked full time in tech or engineering for years before applying. That depth of industry experience shows problem solving, teamwork, and real world accountability. It also brings a totally different perspective to medicine, especially with how important technology is becoming in healthcare. 5) Content Creator Yes, I have seen serious content creators with large platforms apply to med school. Building an audience requires communication skills, consistency, and the ability to explain complex ideas clearly. When done thoughtfully, it can show leadership and impact beyond your immediate circle. At the end of the day, do not just copy these. Unique does not automatically mean good or bad, it just helps you stand out from a sea of similar applications. These are just examples to show how creative you can be with extracurriculars. The best activities are the ones you are genuinely interested in, even if you have never heard of anyone else doing something like that before. #premed #premedstudent #premedadvice #mcat #medicalschool

I’m 24, in medical school, and I’m embarrassed to admit: 1. Some days I still have no idea what I’m doing and I’m just figuring it out as I go. This is all still so new to me, and there are weeks where I truly have to take things one step at a time. 2. I forget basic things I studied last week and then panic like I’ve learned nothing at all. I barely remember parts of first year, and studying for boards terrifies me because it feels like relearning everything from scratch. 3. I compare myself to classmates more than I’d ever like to admit. I worry about how far along I am, how much I know compared to others, and whether I am smart enough. 4. I love medicine deeply, but there are days it completely exhausts me mentally and emotionally. There have been moments where I wanted to give up or walk away, and times I felt like I wasn’t good enough for this field. 5. I don’t always feel confident, even when people think I have it all together. There are good days, and there are really hard days. The hard days take everything in me to push through. 6. I feel guilty when I rest, even though I know I need it. I constantly feel like I should be studying more or doing more, and I can be very hard on myself for taking breaks. 7. I still get imposter syndrome, even after making it this far. The doubt creeps in often, questioning whether I am capable of holding other people’s lives in my hands. 8. I worry sometimes about whether I will be a good enough doctor. I want so badly to do good in this world and help as many people as I can, and I fear I will not always be everything my patients need. 9. And somehow, despite all of this, I still would not trade this path for anything. This is me being completely vulnerable. I question myself, I doubt myself, and I beat myself up over the smallest things. But these feelings are so natural in medicine. You are good enough. You are capable of becoming an incredible provider. Never give up on your dreams. I am rooting for you all the way 🤍 Thank you from the bottom of my heart if you read this far ❤️ For more, follow my journey in medicine and life🕊️🩺 • • • #medstudent #medicalschool #futuredoctor #reels

I was a nurse for five years, from 2015 through 2020. My first job was on a step-down post–cardiac surgery unit, where I worked 32 hours per week and earned $54,807 annually. After that, I worked multiple jobs, including as a cardiac research nurse, a community health nurse, and a pre-/post–Cath Lab holding area nurse. Throughout these roles, I worked PRN, 12-hour shifts, and Monday-through-Friday schedules. As a radiology resident now, I work Monday through Friday for about 45 hours per week and have a salary of $70,835. Once I’m approved for moonlighting, I can comfortably add about $20,000 to that amount—some residents even double their salary. This is just my experience. I know that post-COVID nurses make significantly more than I did prior to the COVID era. #rntomd #nursemd #medicalschool #premed #radiologyresident
