If you remember about the simulation that occurred it wasn't really public knowledge and neither did they talk about it but they were planning for another pandemic. Interestingly at the same time a tender went out for meningitis vaccine. I'm not suggesting that the two have anything in common it just happens to be a coincidence what does strike me is? How now in March? They're talking about meningitis deaths when last year there were 31 that had no media coverage. The fair has been instilled and people are going to take private vaccines for meningitis. Anyone that takes a private vaccine is considered voluntary you work the rest out. #Meningitis. #Vaccine. #FYP.

Meningitis B outbreak made less overwhelming and EASY. *MenACWY is also offered at ages 18-25 to those starting uni as well Whenever there’s a health scare, it’s easy to panic and fear monger but the most important thing is to know the signs and trust your gut, to call for help if you feel like you need it. Sources: BBC and NHS This post is for information purposes only and not medical advice! I am a final year medical student & not a qualified doctor (yet!) Share with a friend so they know the signs and how to identify the classic meningitis rash on different skin colours, because we all present in different ways 🤝

How to spot meningitis rash on Black and Brown skin — the glass test doesn’t work the same. Medical training shows meningitis rash as bright red or purple on pale skin. On Black and Brown skin, it’s barely visible — and gets missed. This is why Black and Brown children die at higher rates from meningitis. THE PROBLEM: On darker skin, the rash appears as subtle darkening, faint bruising, or darker brown/blackish patches — not bright red/purple. The glass test relies on colour contrast that’s invisible on darker skin. WHAT TO LOOK FOR INSTEAD: Check areas with less pigmentation: • Palms of hands • Soles of feet • Inside mouth (gums, inner cheeks) • Inside lower eyelids (pull down gently) • Nail beds DON’T WAIT FOR A RASH: Only 70% of cases develop one. Focus on these symptoms: • Severe sudden headache • High fever • Stiff neck (can’t touch chin to chest) • Sensitivity to light • Confusion, drowsiness • Vomiting • Cold hands/feet despite fever In babies: High-pitched crying, refusing to feed, floppy, bulging soft spot. THE URGENCY: Meningitis kills within 24 hours. Severe headache + fever + stiff neck = A&E immediately. Don’t wait for a rash. If rash appears with symptoms, call 999. WHY THIS MATTERS: Medical education uses only pale skin in training. Doctors aren’t taught to recognize symptoms on darker skin. Black children die from delayed diagnosis. WHAT TO DO: Trust your instincts. Check palms, soles, mouth, eyelids. Don’t rely on the glass test alone. Every hour counts. Know how meningitis presents on your skin tone. Share this. It could save a life. #Meningitis #MeningitisRash #BlackAndBrownSkin #HealthEquality #MeningitisSymptoms UKHealth PublicHealth

Teddy contracted bacterial meningitis 💔 And the only key warning sign was a bulging fontanelle, something that can easily be missed. There were no obvious symptoms at first. He was a little drowsier than usual and feeding less, changes that can be easy to explain away in babies. A bulging fontanelle can be a sign of increased pressure in the brain and needs urgent medical assessment. Because Teddy’s parents understood how serious this sign could be, they acted quickly and went straight to hospital. Teddy spent 6 days in hospital receiving treatment and only once in hospital did he start displaying other symptoms. The actions of Teddy’s parents were critical in saving his life. This is why I always say never talk yourself out of going to hospital. Early assessment and treatment can change outcomes but recognising red flags is what gets you there. In our Baby and Child First Aid Course, we teach parents how to recognise even the most subtle red flags like this and respond with confidence by seeking help when it matters. Link in bio. Thank you to Teddy’s incredible parents for sharing his story with our community 🤍

Please share widely - Meningitis is a medical emergency and here’s two things you need to check today (especially if you have teenagers at university or college) 1 - Make sure your teenagers know the signs and symptoms to look out for in themselves and in their friends and housemates… trying to “sleep it off” is the worst thing they can possibly do Teach them how to do the tumbler test but stress the importance of *not* waiting for that rash… Not every patient will develop the classic non-blanching rash. Screenshot the graphic in this video and send it to your kids to keep on their phone - spotting these symptoms early could save a life. Or just send them this video. 2 - If your child is going away to university, please make sure they have been vaccinated against meningitis A with MenACWY – some universities now insist upon it – as outbreaks in close quarters can spread quickly as we’re seeing currently in Kent. If your child missed vaccination at school, you can still have the MenACWY vaccination before your 25th birthday. It does not protect against all strains of meningitis so it is still crucial to be aware. Cases of meningitis B (not covered by MenACWY) have been reported to be rising among young adults and teenagers in the UK since Covid, so it’s still crucial to make sure your teenager knows what to look out for in themselves and their housemates. A Men B vaccine was introduced a decade ago, but only for babies. *If you or someone you know suspects they have meningitis Call 999 or get to the hospital quickly…* If the outbreak in Kent and Canterbury has given you or your family concern, there are more resources available on the NHS website and @meningitis_research (Meningitis Research Foundation) website #meningitis #sepsis #familyhealth #studentaccommodation #parentsofinstagram University Student health Parenting teenagers Infectious Contagious

Do I live anywhere near the current meningitis outbreak? Not even close. Will I be getting vaccinated? You bet! This is a reminder that if you were born before 2015 in the UK, you likely were not vaccinated against Men B. This vaccine has only been offered on the NHS since 2015 for babies!
