Ever wondered how historic frames are repaired? 🖼️✨ Associate Frame Conservator Gregory Porter takes you behind the scenes as he casts a replacement ornament for a mid-19th century folk painting frame. When selecting where to make his mould, he carefully chose an area with bronze overpaint protecting the original gilding beneath. The overpaint will be removed later during cleaning. We hope his mould-making technique leaves a lasting impression! 😆 #mfaconservation #mfaboston #frameconservation #gildedframe #historicrestoration

🥒 It's PICKLE TIME! Here's a closeup shot of my Pickle Bonnet that was finally finished after languishing in a basket for 5 years. The bonnet is based on an original corded bonnet from 1800-1815 in the collection at MFA Boston— It gets its structure from each of those cords in hand stitched channels and from a small buckram & wire bill to give it shape around the face. There is some tissue paper in the back to maintain some smoothness, otherwise it collapses around the hair and doesn't look as nice. The trim is two rows of box pleated fabric that has been manually dagged on the edges in deep V's. I really, really love how it turned out. It's silly, it's striking, it's unusual. I love Millinery, especially more cloth based items like caps and soft bonnets like this one... However I have no idea how many hours it took since it A) took forever when I did the cording and B) the cording was all done about 5 years ago. Happy to have finished it! ♨️ Because everyone asks: there is no pattern for it— I based this off of a few museum photos that the curators were gracious enough to send me. I do not have any intention of making a pattern for this due to the insane time commitment to make it, but I will be sure to show construction photos sometime in the future for those who are interested. Hope you enjoyed this little clip! #janeaustenfestivalbath #janeausten #regencyfashion #regencybonnet #mfaboston @mfaboston

Last month we visited Boston. My father-in-law asked me who I thought was the greatest living American sculptor. His answer was Martin Puryear, who has this very excellent show on right now at the MFA Boston. So I’ll ask you the same question: who do you think is the greatest living American sculptor? #mfaboston #sculture ##martinpuryear #museumoffineartsboston @mfaboston

If you’ve visited the French Impressionism exhibition, you already know there are 19 incredible Monet paintings to experience. The final room is inspired by the distinctive oval gallery at the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris, which Monet himself helped design to house his iconic Water Lilies cycle. Let Claude Monet’s breathtaking masterpieces surround you – from his dreamlike water lilies and snow-covered grainstacks to the shimmering waters and 'fairylike' air of the Mediterranean coast. Book your tickets to experience Monet in Melbourne today.

One reason I love to travel is to find design inspiration — in public gardens, at art museums, sculpture gardens, and forests. I hit the jackpot last week while in Boston: I’m currently working on a Japanese Garden and Tea House inspired wellness spa for an estate in Paris Mountain. Jack and I stumbled upon the Tenshin-en Japanese Garden at Museum of Fine Arts. The weather was perfect, and we just sat and took it all in — the stone, the composition, the ornamental conifers, the flowering trees…. it was all stunning! From the MFA Boston website: As described by Professor Nakane, “the goal of a karesansui garden is to suggest magnificent scenes from nature by forming the shapes of various landscape elements such as waterfalls, mountains, islands and ocean . . . thus the garden expresses the vastness of nature in miniature, within a strictly limited space.” Tenshin-en is anchored by more than 200 stones including a dry waterfall (takiguchi), tall stones representing Mount Sumeru, and two of the Mystic Isles of the Immortals: the Tortoise Island (kamejima) and the Crane Island (tsurujima). The garden is also home to more than seventy species of plants—1,750 specimens in all—drawn from America and Japan, providing color and texture to the landscape. Cherries, Japanese maples, and pines serve as symbols of the changing seasons. @pearcebdesigns Creating beautiful spaces for functional outdoor living. #landscapedesign #landscapedesigner #ilovemyjob #mfaboston #landscapearchitecture #inspiration so

In a landmark move, the Museum of Fine Arts, @MFABoston has returned two large 1857 ceramic vessels by the enslaved potter David Drake (also known as “Dave the Potter”) to his descendants. 🏺 Crafted while enslaved in South Carolina, the jars bear Drake’s signature and haunting inscriptions—now recognized as rightful cultural property. 🏺 The agreement blends museum curatorship with ethical restitution, marking a milestone in how institutions address art created under oppression. . #culturalrestitution #artjustice #DaveThePotter #MFABoston #historyart #AfricanAmericanart #heritagestewardship #art #museum #exhibition #artgallery #artmuseum #artnews #artsnews #museumnews #museum #museumsnews

We finally saw the Basquiat exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Jean-Michel Basquiat was a Haitian Puerto Rican American poet, musician, and graffiti prodigy in late-1970s. One of his paintings once sold for $110 million! Andy Warhol was a mentor, and he later collaborated with him. Worth a visit if you are in the Boston area! #basquiat #mfaboston #hiphopgeneration #boston

Since its creation in the 19th century, countless artists across the globe have drawn inspiration from Katsushika Hokusai’s “Under the Wave off Kanagawa,” also known as the “Great Wave.” Among them is contemporary Canadian artist Linda Sormin. In this close-looking video, Kendall DeBoer, Curatorial Assistant in the Department of Contemporary Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, considers the details of Sormin’s 2023 sculpture “Boru Sibaso Paet, on the foam of the primordial sea” and explains the reasons why she considers this work to be a necessary addition to “Hokusai: Inspiration and Influence from the Collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.” Notice all of the intricate qualities of Sormin’s sculpture by reserving your tickets to see the exhibition at SAM before it closes Sunday, January 21. _ @mfaboston #Hokusai #KatsushikaHokusai #LindaSormin #ContemporaryArt #Sculpture #CanadianArtist #SeattleArtMuseum #MuseumofFineArtsBoston #MFABoston #JapaneseArt #JapanesePrints #WoodblockPrints #JapaneseArtist #SeattleArt #SeattleMuseum #SeattleEvents #SeattleTourism #NowOnView #LinkinBio

THIS ARTIST. @alexmakes_art is lead artist for @MFABoston’s current Community Arts Initiative (on display until Oct 22, so go see ALL OF IT, it’s reeeaaallly cool). I met Alex at a community event during the holiday season. She hosted a DIY ornament workshop with an energy you don’t find often. Vibrant, goofy, creative, thoughtful, inclusive, talented, DYNAMIC, and determined to spread joy through art (plus many other nice words). We bonded after I admitted to her that I made crafty things using my cats hair. She was, at the time, learning about the art of working with hair too…. specifically needle felting with wool. AND SOOOO after learning literally everything she could, through many interesting avenues, she shared her brain with kids from 10+ Boston community organizations. She taught them how to work with wool! First, by taking them to meet furry friends at the Waltham Fields Community Farm and then teaching them how to needle felt. Along with her help and many others (she was telling me of the incredible MFA employees that helped her) they put together a community masterpiece ON DISPLAY NOW UNTIL OCTOBER 22 at the MFA Boston. The video is such a tease, I didn’t want to show you the enormity of the project but it’s SO good. It’s a needle felted landscape of wool with wool roots and pods that you wish you could burrow into. But EVERY element - like the lady bug, Elmo and donut - were all made by the kids part of those Boston community organizations. They also helped in creating the quilt piece too. It’s a special concept and something I have yet to see ever in my life. This is a good one for eye spy. Go see it. . . . #bostonart #artinboston #mfaboston #wool #communityart #bostonartist
