🔴 Key Highlight: Targeting fungal metabolism — not just genes — could unlock next-generation antifungal drugs. News in Brief : Fungal infections, a rapidly growing global health threat responsible for increasing hospitalisations and deaths, may soon become easier to treat. Researchers at CSIR–Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad, led by scientist Sriram Varahan, have identified a critical biological mechanism that makes fungi infectious. The study shows fungi shift from a harmless yeast form to an aggressive filamentous form to invade human tissues. This transformation was earlier believed to be controlled mainly by genetic signals. However, the team discovered that the process is strongly driven by fungal metabolism, especially glycolysis — the breakdown of sugars — which produces sulfur-containing amino acids essential for invasion. Inside the human body, environmental stress such as nutrient scarcity and temperature change triggers this transformation, making fungi harder to eliminate by immunity and medicines.
