Once inside, the virus takes over the host’s resources to replicate itself, creating numerous new phages. The process culminates in lysis, where the bacterial cell wall is destroyed and the cell literally “blows up,” releasing the newly formed viruses to infect other nearby cells. Key Concepts Explained • Attachment & Infection: The phage attaches to the surface of the bacterium and injects its genetic material. • Hijacking DNA: The virus halts the host cell’s normal functions and forces it to produce viral components instead. • Replication: The cell becomes a factory, assembling multiple copies of the virus. • Lysis (The “Blow”): To escape, the viruses produce enzymes that rupture the bacterial membrane, causing the cell to burst and die.

(I’m biased I studied it for my PhD) We used shortbread whole genome sequencing to study and understand the diversity of entire E. coli populations in different niches. This is just an example of one of papers from my PhD where we studied E. coli populations on retail foods. Keep an eye out for the next paper too 👀
