Microchimerism is the idea that fetal cells linger in a mother’s blood and tissues (bone, brain) for *at least* several decades, if not her whole life. The same goes for the fetus - they get some of her cells. And with twins? They get each other’s. It’s. So. Cool. While maternal - fetal blood never mixes (or shouldn’t, at least), individual cells CAN cross the placenta in a bidirectional fashion. The cells may benefit the mother’s health by improving the immune system and promoting tissue repair. There’s some thought this could contribute to autoimmune reactions, potentially. Male DNA is found in the brains of women who carried male babies and the presence of this DNA is showing to be protective agains Alzheimer’s disease, which is really fascinating. 💕🙏🏼Another important thing about this is that for those who have lost a child - whether in pregnancy or during their life - remembering this fact might offer a moment of sweet solace, knowing you are always carrying your child with you. A mouse study even showed that WHERE the cells went, they were integrated into that tissue. So if a fetal cell ended up in its mother’s heart, it became part of her cardiac tissue. The baby’s presence always beating with mom’s heart ❤️ I’ve had two very early losses. The first was extremely sad and caught me off guard in a lot of ways. The second - I found peace much sooner.
