Look inside a lab! Today’s visit gets a little more nuanced. We’re taking you inside an instrument that’s inside the NIST Center for Nanoscale Science (aka our NanoFab). Shown here is an instrument used to add a layer of vaporized metal onto the surface of a silicon wafer. The machinery rotating within helps to ensure the metal gets deposited evenly and uniformly, not too much on one side of the wafer and too little on the other. Depositing a layer of metal is a critical step for the development of semiconductor devices. It’s also one use case for foil across NIST’s campuses. The interior walls of this machine are carefully lined with aluminum foil to catch the remnants of chrome, gold, and other source materials. The foil keeps the machine clean. Foil is a much more common tool in research labs than you might realize as an outsider looking in. Although they appear similar on paper, their architectures represent two fundamentally different design philosophies. 🔹 Internal architecture Motorola 68000 True 32-bit internal architecture 32-bit ALU Intel 8086 / 8088 16-bit architecture 16-bit ALU 👉 The 68000 was designed for elegance; Intel focused on backward compatibility. 🔹 Memory addressing 68000: 24-bit linear addressing → 16 MB 8086/8088: 20-bit addressing (1 MB) 🔹 Bus design and cost trade-offs 68000: 16-bit external data bus (cost-driven) 8086: 16-bit data bus 8088 (IBM PC): 8-bit data bus → significant performance loss 👉 IBM chose cost efficiency over architectural purity. 🔹 Instruction set Motorola 68000 Highly orthogonal instruction set Extremely compiler-friendly Intel 8086 Irregular instruction set Software complexity increased 🔹 Historical outcome 68000 → Macintosh, Amiga, Atari ST, Sun, industrial systems 8086/8088 → IBM PC → PC ecosystem dominance 👉 The 68000 won technically.
